if they're the same price i would definitely go with the i5. you'll get significantly better per core performance and even if you don't get multi threading 6 cores is still a good amount

The problem with the 9400 is core/thread count. There are games that when going for higher FPS can max out or nearly max out the hex core i5’s already. While the i5 is the better gaming cpu today it has little headroom for tomorrow’s games. We saw how prior gen quad core i5’s lasted compared to their i7 8 thread counterparts for gaming, the i7 proved much better long term for AAA gaming. Personally I’m not a fan of the current i5’s when Ryzen is an option.

Not a pro, but from personal experience the i5 tends to choke when playing some AAA games. By choke I mean they go up to 100% usage (happens to me in AC and Forza because I did not play/try any other games on it) and it is quite annoying. I am online on discord all day long while I'm playing and if the CPU goes up to 100% I can't hear anything and my friends can't hear me either... Basically, if you want to have higher FPS go for the i5, but you will sacrifice any other background app. If you want to have background apps running fine go for the r5, but you will be penalised with around (maybe) 10-15 FPS ?

I'm now selling my i5 because it's just so damn annoying. Buying r5 2600 soon.

Yes, I agree. If you can wait for the new Ryzen lineup then do it. Even if you won't buy the 3rd gen, you could find the 2nd for cheaper after its release. For me the 2600 has a good price now, maybe I'll upgrade to the 3rd gen if I need to, buy for now the 2600 is the best value for me.

Problem is, your's is a 2nd gen chip its pretty old if you ask me, even the 4th gen chips but none the less overclocking is a good option.
I know it is but what can poor people like me do? Ya, buying these outdated chips but that's running just right for me as I don't do so much of resource consuming work, that's just me being me

Tbh wait for the ryzen 3000 series.I got my ryzen 5 2600 in november so it was worth it then. You may see the prices drop now cause of the 3xxx cpu launching soon.My cpu are 500 bucks cheaper than when i got it.I know the first gen ryzens are cheap but i will still hold off.Either get a 3xxx model or something like a 2600 or 2600x(my 2600 non x with my aio i can clock it to same speed than a 2600x)
