So where i live both of these are the same price and i am thinking about getting the ryzen but then some one told me if you are only gaming with your pc which i am ,then you should get the i5

But i am leaning towards the ryzen because it has 12 threads compared to the 8 of the i5.Do these threads help games run any better?

what about the future when the new consoles come out are games gonna take advantage of the extra threads?

Solution
I would choose the 2600...the i5 may be slightly faster in older titles but as more games move towards true multi-threading the 2600 will become a better choice. Paired with fast memory, solid gpu, and a fast nVME ssd the 2600 is an excellent gamer. Also the upgrade path for the AMD socket AM4 is simply untouchable by intel at this point...2 or 3 years down the road you'll be able to pick up a used 3000 or 4000 series cpu and see a massive performance increase over the 2600.

Wow, the hypnotize effect of i5 being a good cpu still in effect? Ever since q3 2016, since battlefield 1 released, its has shown that i5 are not a decent cpu. I'm still prefer my 2012's i7-3770K over i5-9400F (considering its 8 years old, its still not that bad). Currently, my main build are using Xeon E5-26XX V4 @3GHz 8 core 16 thread and its already using 50% cpu on BFV with GTX 1060 6Gb to get 70+ fps on 1080p ultra setting.

If you want to build a long lasting build, go for current ryzen generation. With the same budget, you can get more.
2600 is the best to start with. Its cheap but got 6 core 12 thread. Should be enough for some time. Its not the best, but it should perform up to RTX 2070 (well, its 2070 is too pricey already)
For comparison:

They performance trade blows depending on game but mostly the cpu usage on ryzen are lower.
