Solution
If on a budget, I'd look hard at the gaming benchmarks of R5-3600, occasionally as low as $167 these days....; I'd be happier with 12 threads over only 6, and more confident of sufficient minimum FPS for future games. (Oddly enough, the R3-3300X at only $120 almost matches the R5-3600 in gaming, despite having only four cores and 8 threads...)

I'm mostly having problems in fortnite but will getting the i5 9400f affect other games as well. And yes i am getting a new motherboard, a non gaming one but i made sure it was suitable for the i5 9400f

That's because the 3300x is a 4/8 on Steroids and the 3600 is chomping only on Protein bars.

Once games really start using 6-10 threads instead of the 4-8 threads they do now, the 3300x will be taking a bigger backseat. Kinda like what happened to the instantly popular Pentium G3258, did awesome at first on games like CSGO, then GTA V killed it almost overnite. I figure maybe 3 years and the R3 will be sitting on the bench right next to the G3258, watching the world pass it by.
