Hi guys,

I have a i5 9600k recently bought on a Z370P, but I forgot to update the bios, now nothing happens when I boot it, I was thinking that I can update the bios straight after but I think there's no other way than getting an older version cpu, update the bios and try again?

Thanks

Solution

If the board is using an older bios(likely the issue) you'll need to update bios to use the system. Only a few boards support updating the bios without a cpu or without a compatible cpu installed. Nither of the 2 boards I listed in my previous post support this feature.
A couple of options are
- Borrow an 8th gen cpu and use it to update the bios
- Buy an 8th gen cpu and use it to upgrade the bios
- Return the motherboard and get a Z390 board...
Is the mobo the Gigabyte Z370P or the ASUS Z370-P? Both of these are 8th gen mobos

The I5 9600K, is a 9th gen CPU, and isnt compatible with either of them

So, you'll have to either replace the mobo with one that supports Coffee Lake.

Or replace the CPU with one that supports Kaby Lake/Skylake CPU's

Both of those motherboards are compatible with 8th gen(Coffee lake) and 9th gen(Coffee lake refresh), they just require a bios update for 9th gen support.

Kaby lake and Skylake(7th and 6th) gen only work on 1xx and 2xx series motherboards.

But my question was if my board is using an older version, is that how it should behave? Not boot at all? Not any error messages on the screen? I'm only asking because I'm afraid of the cpu being faulty as I have installed an Artic Cooler with low skills in my hands.
