Question i5 9600k on a prime z370 A II

anyone know if i should be able to install windows with above combo, i can go into bios , update bios, i can run pre installed windows from another computer on hdd with it but can not install to m.2 or hdd, tells me i cant install to drive any of them. anyone know why this might happen?

Disconnect the HDD, that should force the system to use the M.2 SSD. After Windows is installed reconnect the HDD. If it doesn't show up then you may need to initialize the drive in Drive Management.

yeah tried that still no luck. could it be because of a 9th gen cpu on this board, asus said it wouldnt boot to bios when i asked , while waiting for this info from them pc place said i could so i bought a new cpu from them, it did boot and was able to update bios too but still made no difference to being able to install windows on a drive. the drives im using have been used on other boards before with out issue and install.

The CPU should be fine with that board as long as the motherboard BIOS has been updated which you said you already did.

I just want to get a clear understanding, when your trying to do a clean install of Windows it won't allow you to select the M.2, correct?

List your storage specs.

yes thats all correct, updated to latest bios but made no difference to installing. says unable to to install that partition, does same for both hdds i have tried. 256gb m.2 sabrent pocket rocket, that i normally use for operating system and wd blue hdd and a toshiba hdd. 1000gbs. maybe this board little different something is odd will try go format with another pc and try again, any other ideas?
im liking this prime and 9600k though, just need fresh windows on a m.2

Try formatting the M.2 with another system then try again with the M.2 only.

well made no difference, tried formats new partitions etc everything possible unallocated etc . then i tried making new partition of just 500mb, well that worked could now install to rest of drive leaving that small amount unused, windows then was a way doing what it does. so i think there something odd about this board i never seen that before. looks like this will need be done when ever i install on this mobo, i let ya know if anything else happens, thank bro

Have you tried deleting the drive prior to windows installation but at the screen that wants you to select a drive to do the installation?

yeah had tried that too, did all things possible many times
other than split the drive as explained above. ive done many installations i lost count long ago but this is my first above 6th gen. all done now and is a rocket ship , nice, even my gtx 970 now is off pc performance test chart even bltzs rx 580, hope all that extra performance dosnt kill it,
all my gear 98 to 100 percentile. even my ram went from 87 to 98. my pocket rocket now beats a 960 pro. certainly going very well and im running power save mode with those scores. time to play little. so i cant explain installing hopefully i dont have a dodgy board or something.

well not sure whats happening here, got windows install as explained , my second hard drive got connected but was not showing, then windows would have intermittent hung on start up with spinning counter on screen. disconnected drive all was fine with just m.2. next day put hdd back in was fine and was able to use it. all has been fine since. but starting up asus al suite says it locked app by windows in red. thought i try getting rid of that small unallocated space had to make on m.2 to install windows, by first booting to usb to install windows , cant install failed to load a driver to install windows . so i cant install windows now
Does this sound normal?
to reinstall windows all i can think of doing is removing m.2 drive format it in another pc then try again.
why did hdd not work initially could it be needed update from windows etc, using different type cable for from previous 6th gen board ?
all these drive work fine on earlier mobo's.
