I've been slowly piecing my new rig together on a budget and it's time for the brain.

Between the 6500 and the 6600K the 20-$40 difference would put the 6600K over the top easily for me but the lack of a stock cooler on the 66K and an additional component will put me back another 2-4 weeks and makes the difference closer to $100.

Or if anyone wants to throw a better bargain chip in the mix I am open to that too.

I game heavily and do a lot of photoshop/AE and video editing, how substantial of a performance difference am I looking at. This is going in a coolermaster mITX and I usually do not overclock.

Gaming wise even most Triple A titles I rarely have to turn down settings on my current system (e8600/nvidia750ti) which I don't mind. But I am looking in to doing some heavier rendering and my skillset in animation is moving up a bit.

Current components

EVGA Z170 Stinger
8gb crucial DDR 4 (will get another 8gb down the line)
600w corsair semi modular PSU
coolmaster mITX E-130 case
Recycling my nvidia 750ti pending a upgrade later

Signed,
Anxiously retiring my LGA775 E8600.

If it was just a $20 difference I would go with the 6600k. As you have noticed the actual price difference can be more than that though.

If you aren't going to overclock I would go with the 6500. Going this way you save some money by using the stock cooler and you can also save some more money by going with an H110 or H170 motherboard instead of a Z170 motherboard.

The 6500 should keep you above 60 FPS in any game as long as you pair it with a capable enough GPU.

My wifes just going to have be mad I think, I already have the rest of the build so the z170 is already on hand and I usually am on a 4-5 year upgrade cycle so I tend to make my stuff last. Mainly because my e8600 really hasn't shown a pressing need for an update.

Thanks :)
