Hi everyone!
I just purchased a GTX 1070 and to prevent bottlenecking in my system I was planning on upgrading my FX 8350 to either and i5 or i7. I'm still unsure on which one to get. I'm only going to be gaming. No video editing or rendering at all. Thanks in advance for any help!

A 6600k would be a great processor to use then, no real need to get an i7. Though some people may claim having the extra threads (note threads, not cores) are "futureproof" there is no such thing in the computer industry really.

Thanks for the quick reply! So if I get an i5 you think I would be set for gaming for about the next 3 years or so before I have to upgrade?

You ought to be fine. If the 6600k is ineffective at gaming in three years, then so is pretty much every other CPU available today. And while the i7 is nice -- I have mine so I can sometimes do some work on my main rig if the work rig is doing something -- you won't really get much of a benefit when gaming is all you're going to be doing.

Well the FX-8350 is not necessarily going to be the bottleneck and would support the GTX-1070.
Have you OCed the 8350 at all.?

There are new CPUs and MBs just round the corner. See how the 1070 performs and wait a little till ZEN is released.

List your full system specs for better advice.

I just have it 4.2 ghz right now. I haven't tried pushing it much further. But here are my systems specs
AMD FX-8350
Corsair H60 CPU Cooler
Corsair Vengeance 16gb
MSI Radeon 7950
ASUS M5A97 motherboard
Kingston 240gb SSD
WD Black 1TB
800W PSU

Unfortunately you won't be able to OC much further than stock frequency with the cooler you have.
That would require an upgrade to H100 if it would fit into your Case.
You would be able to get a 4.8GHz OC with some Bios Tweaks.

Get the most of your CPUs capability and OC it to the MAX.

List the tier rating of your PSU as the FX-8350 needs an efficient source of power when under load.
The Wattage is OK but the rating may be suspect.

It's either gold or platinum. I can't remember off the top of my head.
