Hi, I am going to be upgrading my e8500 and need some help.
I mostly surf the net and play mmogs like world of warcraft. I don't really watch movies or burn a lot of Cd's so is the i7 over kill for something like that? I also use a gtx 260 as my video card. Last question I wanted to keep my 550 watt psu and would that be a problem for the i5 or i7? Thanks.

if the 550w is good quality then it is fine.
I would go fir the i5 because you don't need anything super for your uses and i would even consider going AM3 to save more money since once again, your purpose for the computer seems very undemanding

Definitely the i5 for your needs, and as TheDuke said, go for AMD is you want a cheaper solution. You'll need a new motherboard no matter what, so start from the motherboard, and go from there. If you find a motherboard you like, then buy the processor that goes with it.

I am not to familiar with the xeon chips. Any other thought's on this chip?
I have no problem with spending the 40 bucks extra if the experts think it would be a goos buy?

Even an i3 is enough to play WoW. But if you need the extra horse power then i5 750 is the one or i7 860. i7 920 is too much for any home use. I think your GPU primarily decides the size of the PSU. GTX260 would do fine on a 550W, but it depends which brand it is.

not worth the extra bucks for the xeon... go with the i5... unless u are going with a dual or triple card setup(which i see is not the case)... the xeon processor mentioned uses 1156 socket... so any of the p55 boards will do...

I personally think you current system is fine. Have you or do you overclock your e8500?
