Between the Intel Core i5 750 and the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9K/8k/6K, the Core i5 is superior for both single and multi-core applications, although if you are talking about the Core i5 650, 660, 661 or 670, they are faster for single/dual core applications and ones which use hyperthreading, but not for applications which use three to four cores.
