I will be purchasing a laptop soon (low budget) to use for gaming and other general things (word processing, web browsing, etc). Whatever laptop I choose will have a discrete/dedicated graphics card, so that part of the equation is removed. I can either get one with an AMD A6-3410mx quad core, or for $100 more I can get one with an Intel i5-2430M dual core. So, for gaming which is better, the AMD's additional cores or the Intel's higher clock speed?

Does the Intel laptop have a dedicated graphics chipset? If not, then the AMD APU will be far superior. What kind of games will you be playing?

EDIT: Just saw the part about both having dedicated chipsets. I guess it comes down to what the Intel laptop has and what games you play.

I was looking at two externally identical hp laptops, the dv6t and dv6z. The dv6z costs $600 with the AMD proc mentioned above, 6 gb RAM, and a 1gb Radeon HD 6750M. The dv6t costs $680 with the Intel proc mentioned above, 8gb Ram, and a 1gb Radeon HD 6770M. So is the i5 and somewhat improved video card worth the extra $80? Also, I play pretty much every type of games, but I focus on RPG, MMORPG, and RTS.

Thanks. You hit the central part of my question (2 core i5 vs 4 core A6) and gave a good answer.
