I've been making a list of parts for my first PC build for quite a while now and I originally chose a Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz but then I head that i5 were better. So I'm wondering if i should get a Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz with a R9 280x or just stick with the Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz and use the saved money to maybe get a better GPU like a R9 290?

Solution
This would be the strongest gaming build for your money mate 😀

A Haswell i5 / R9 280x based rig would be my recommendation for 1080p gaming.
I3 is usually strong enough. Even for a might R9 290 (barely).

That been said, haswell i5 is THE cpu for a gaming build. And R9 280x is all you need for 1080p gaming.
As Suzuki said, budget and currency/country would allow us to help you. Maybe even help you to find a good balanced gaming build w/ i5; R9290/GTX970; quality psu; good case; 8GB RAM.

Very good build from Arch. +1.

Even better from filippi. +1.

Intel i3-4160 + R9 290 is a worthy consideration and will beat i5-4460 + R9 280X depending on the game.

However, filippi's build contains an i5-4440 + GTX 970 which beats both combinations. I just wouldn't get that case as those Cooler Master budget cases are quite crap.

Thanks for this, i will probably go for a Bitfenix Comrade case instead but will definately go for the 970 and i5 :)
