i5 vs i7 cpus

I have an opportunity to purchase a second hand system that was used by a gamer. I intend to use this system for scientific applications like The World Community Grid.org and GPUgrid.

I am aware that the i7 cpu use hyper-threaded technology but I am not sure about the i5 cpu.

Can anyone help me out here. I would appreciate it.

i5 does not support hyperthreading .
i7 is better solution for your needs .

i3 = dual core with hyperthreading
i5 = quad core no hyperthreading
i7 = quad core with hyperthreading

And FYI, Xeon E3 (socket 1150) = quad core with hyperthreading but no iGPU and slightly lower clock speed.
