i5 vs i7 for programming

I'm building a new desktop for programming and gaming and I'm wondering if I should get an i5 or i7 CPU. I'll probably be waiting until the new processors come out from Intel. I'll get either the 7600K or 7700K from Kaby Lake, used for Java, C++ and Python, as I'm just a college student. What do you guys think? Would there be a big difference between the two?

I don't know how much hyper-threading affects what I'll be doing.

Compiles might be a little faster with an i7. Either way you only have 4 physical cores so HPC type work with high thread counts won't really change. Your keyboard, display and storage (ensure you have an foolproof backup system) are probably more important.

I'm studying computer science, I'm also a heavy gamer. I have several friends who are gamers and programmers, and also my cousin is a programmer at Microsoft and Harvard university. We all prefer the intel core i5 6600k, or the 7600k as you would be getting. I strongly recommend saving the money. The big difference is hyper threading and cache which is not a big deal for what your using it for, if you where a commercial video editor it would make a big difference

I personally do programming with python and C and my system has an i 5 in it, so I do not think the i5 or the i7 matters much for programming. The programs I make run very smoothly on an i5.
