Hello guys,
so i'm planning to upgrade my (intensive gaming) rig from an AMD athlon X4 860K to Intel (so i will upgrade my mobo to MSI Z97 GAMING 5) but i can't decide whether to buy an I5 or an I7 and wich I5/I7? thanks!

I disagree to an extent, some games such as GTA V, Black Ops 3 and Battlefront will eat up your CPU, having the extra 4 threads in an i7 can increase performance by quite a bit, my i5 is pinned at 100% on Black Ops 3.

An i5 wouldn't be a problem, but an i7 or a Hyperthreaded Xeon would be better.

Can u suggest me an I5 and an I7 pls

I agree, more games are starting to use all the cores of an i5 and more. DA: Inquisition will use 6 full cores in Red Cliff, while my old i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz struggled hard.

AC: Syndicate stutters badly in some spots on the i5 compared to an i7 (watch around the 10 min mark). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d0rsT0hauo

Fallout 4 is showing good improvements with an i7. Times are changing, and I can only guess we'll see more good multithreading, which might be fueled by the new console's 8 cores.

my budget for the cpu is max 400 but lower is always nice ;)
Specs:

Ram: corsair dominator 2X8GB
GPU: Radeon R9 290 Asus DirectCU II OC Edition
current cpu: AMD athlon X4 860K
cpu cooler: Coolermaster hyper 103
PSU: corsair RM850 (i know it's a little bit to much but I didn't think good about it when buying...)
storage: 250GB SSD and 1TB HDD
motherboard: MSI A88X-G45 gaming fm2+

IS the i5-4690K a good choice? since it fits very well in my budget and has great reviews...

Admirable
If an i7 is in your possible budget now (and you want to be at the top of the performance curve for the next several years with this machine), I should point out that 2016 is going to be a ramp-up year for VR, with an i5 as the bare minimum already.

When the CV2 comes to the scene in 2017, 8-threaded CPUs will fast become the requirement for the best performance (along with minimum GPU specs that will seem 'crazy' by today's standards). It always comes down to budget, of course, but if you're already topped out with a GPU, going to an i7 is probably well worth it over the long run.

I really like the 6500 too but i have RRD3 ram sticks and i'd rather not change them because they're pretty expensive...

You could either spend a bit extra and get DDR4 (best option), get a DDR3 compatible Skylake motherboard (although I don't recommend it) or just get something like a 4460 and MSI H97 Gaming 3
