I am part way to a new build and could use some advice on the the components. I don't game and I don't overclock. I use Dragon Naturally Speaking a lot; word process; run Note Bene for research. I multi-task quite a bit with these programs. Looking for a solid long-haul build with minimal build conflicts.

Here is what I have thus far:

Case: Corsair 200R
MB: Gigabyte B460 HD3
CPU: I7-10700K
PSU: Seasonic Focus GX-650
GPU: None (using CPU)
OS: Win 10

Here is what I need, and/or I am undecided about:

Fans: I think the two on the 200R case are sufficient. Sound correct?
Cooler: Noctua NH-U125 (sufficient?)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 X 8GB) DDR4 3600 (PC4-28800) C18 1.35V -- will this run at this speed on this board and CPU? I think so but I am not sure.
SSD: SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus SSD 500GB - M.2 NVMe -- tentative. Welcome recommendations.
ODD: would like a Bluray (watch films). Welcome recommendations.

Monitors: I need to run two. I have an HP 24yh and will likely purchase a second.

Thank you for your help.

For the usecase you are describing*:
*(powerful wordprocessor with speech recognition, and bluray playback that can keep up with loads of browser tabs and several pdfs open accross two screens)

i5 10400 would have been more than enough for many years to come.

In regard to memory 10th gen CPU's can't really take benefit of RAM faster than DDR4 2666 hence i recommend (HX426C16FB3A/16)
https://www.amazon.com/HyperX-2666MHz-Desktop-HX426C16FB3-16/dp/B07WF9MD3Q/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=HX426C16FB3/16&qid=1627754754&sr=8-1

for bluray movies, i'd recommend trusted classic
https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Electronics-Internal-Blu-Ray-BDR-209DBK/dp/B00H2GTXKS

in regards to CPU cooling solution. 10400 has one included, and for the kind of work you describe, it will stay at relatively quiet.
However you if like the PC being silent, i would recommend Corsair H80i V2. It will fit in the case you picked just fine, and you
will be able to run it at very low rpm. Quite frankly the fan on the Seasonic PSU will be more audible most of the time.

Bazy 505 --

Thank you for your comments.

The I5-10400 looks like a very nice CPU for the price. But I don't mind spending the money on the I7-10700K as a long-term investment for flexibility and speed increase .

The HyperX is made by Hynix, and I have read negative review of Hynix (though what do I know? . . . .) As for the speed, here is where I am confused. Some people say the B460 MB won't run anything higher than 2666, other say the "K" CPU will, perhaps only with the XMP initiated. I don't know. You are probably correct. The Gigabyte specs list a couple of 2933's but really begin with the 2666. Is that spec sheet outdated?

I will give serious consideration to the Pioneer Bluray player.

I appreciate your time. Thanks again.

That board isn't going to handle an unlocked Intel cpu due to its weak VRM's. You want something like the i5 11500 seeing how that cpu has identical UHD 750 graphics and pair it up with a B560 or H510 board.

that is exactly why i suggested 10400, my goal was to steer the build, not make a new one.

@ OP
SK-Hynix is, and traditionally has been the second largest manufacturer of DDR and GDDR memory for many many years.
With only Samsung surpassing it. And they wouldn't be where they are if they produced third rate products.

Now a lot of that good or bad reputation for one chip manufactuer or the other ( be Mircon, Elpida ( now part of Micron), Samsung, Hynix etc..)
has more to do with the long lived dirty truth about companies that make DDR modules in which these DDR chips are used.
And that not so secret secret is that native speed and timings or these chips are often much lower than what DDRAM stick
manufacturers dial them up to. And than you end up with sticks that are unstable, or only work in first 2 slots of each channel, or run hotter than they should.

Now in regard to DDR4 2666, is that 10 gen CPU's can't really take advantage of higher speed memory unless you overclock ringbus ( hence the support for faster memory on motherboard). And overclocking ringbus is generally yelds meager performance gains and generally compromises overal stablility of the system.

10700K doesn't make sense for what you want to use the pc for, moreover as why_me noted, motherboard you have chosen is absolutely unsuitable for any sort of tweaking or god forbid overclocking. With the motherboard you have initially chosen i was under presumption you're on a tight budget, with that particular motherboard being bottom of the barrel of Gigabyte product stack.

Keep in mind pairing a expensive CPU with a cheap motherboard is a lot worse than pairing a cheap CPU with uncompromised motherboard.

Don't run a 10700K on a B460 HD3. The VRM is not sufficient for the cpu and cause thermaltrotteling.
Some people say the B460 MB won't run anything higher than 2666,
With a i7 on B460 RAM can run at 2933.

If you use the igpu, go for a i7-11700 and B560 (Asrock Steel Legend or Asus TUF for example). It has a way better igpu than 10700K.

What PSU are you planning to use?

Okay. Thanks for the input. I’m learning and researching.

As a quick point of clarification, this is my fourth build over about 14 years. I try to keep up with the broad advances in computers but don’t really have the time (until I retire in a year or so) to gain the knowledge you guys have. I generally try to find a site with a video of a build so I can get it done without screwing up. Such is the situation at present, and I am following some of the system elements recommended on the video – though I do try to research the components as well. So, I am somewhat caught in the middle. I would like to build a mainstream computer with good performance and longevity, and I don’t mind spending the money to accomplish this.

I now understand that the B460 HD3 is a budget board and one likely unable to handle a high-end CPU like the I7-10700K due to VRM limitations. And that 10th generation CPU’s can’t benefit from RAM speeds greater than 2666 also due to the B460 limitation.

So, my alternative is:
  1. To downgrade the CPU, using something like an I5-10400 (with igpu and stock cooler), downgrade the RAM using something like the HyperX-2666, and keeping the B460 (and cooler and psu). OR,
  2. Upgrade the CPU to something like an I5-11500, or even an I7-11700 (with a solid igpu), upgrade the board to a B560 (or B510), use RAM such as Teamgroup T-Force Vulcan Z DDR4 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 3200MHz (PC4-25600) CL16, and add a something like a Noctua NH-U125 cooler.
In the past I have used Asus (1x) and Gigabyte (3x). I seem to have had good luck with Gigabyte. So, here my choice is a Gigabyte B560 HD3 (getting hard to find), or a B560 AORUS PRO AX (though I don’t need the Wifi). Do these options sound about right?

I have already purchased the 200R case, the Gigabyte B460 HD3 (which I can return), the I7-10700K (which I can also return), the Seasonic Focus GX-650 (which was $3 more than a GX-550). I know the B460 HD3 fits readily in the 200R case.

I’m inclined to go with option #1. What do you think?

And thanks again.

I would say with the parts you already purchased, and in light of what you are going to be using that PC for, option #1 would be more sensible.
Just swap out the CPU for 10400. Buy a no frills 2666 16GB stick kit from compatibility list
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B560-HD3-rev-10/support#support-doc . In regards to PSU keep the 650 one. You won't save much buy going lower than that.

Thanks for your advice. I will take it.

Any quick thoughts on an SSD -- 500G should do nicely. As I mentioned, I am strongly considering the Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2 NVMe.

Thanks.

Samsung has been regarded as a gold standard in consumer SSD's for a very long time. And for the most part, that reputation is well deserved even if they tend to price it a little higher than they should. 970EVO Plus is perfectly legitimate choice that won't dissapoint.

Thank you for the confirmation of the Samsung. I've been using a Samsung SSD for 7 years in my present build, and it has worked flawlessly. And I use a Samsung as a backup medium.

The price of the I5-10400 just dropped 20%. Nice. Thinking about putting that money towards 32G of RAM -- 2 16G sticks of the HyperX 2666. Overkill? Probably . . . .

Thank you so much for your advice. I'm ordering the remaining parts today. I truly appreciate your time and knowledge.
