[SOLVED] i7-10700k or i9-10900k?

Hi guys,

My i7-8700k recently died and I’m upgrading now and I don’t want to have at least 8 cores for future proofing.

I’m currently looking at the i7-10700k and the i9-10900k and would like your opinions on them and advice on what to purchase.

I just play simulators like Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane 11 and then games like Warzone and PUBG.

I’ve 32GB DDR4 3200MHZ and a RTX2070

You will need some beefy form of cooling, a good airflow case, a Z490 chipset motherboard and a reliably built PSU to cater to your upgrade endeavor.

I'd side with the i9 if you have the money for the motherboard and processor. Also, what are the specs to the rest of your current hardware?

Aerocool 800 case
Corsair Vengeance 3200MHZ 32GB (4x8) Ram
Gigabyte Windforce 8gb RTX2070
Will be getting a new Z490 motherboard

In my country you can get a 10700k for 320€ and a 10900k for 480€.

If the price diff in your country is similar, then go with the 10700k imo...Both of them will deliver great performance for gamers.

I would go for I9 if I can.

A bigger AIO should be used. But you might have to change your PC case. If I got this right, your case can't handle anything beyond 280mm AIO. You may to improve your cooling, especially if you plan to OC- like to fit a bigger AIO, and better circulation/ventilation, etc.

I currently have a 10700KF with an X53. But I don't OC.

I built mine in December for the ultimate MSFS2020 experience... and went with the 10900k. You're definitely going to want to bump up that 240mm cooler... I'd go 360mm if it's in your budget. The X73 is $179 and the Z73 (exact same cooler with better aesthetics) is $279...

The airflow case I chose was the Fractal Meshify 2... about $140 and made Gamers Nexus best of 2020 list and won best mechanical design.

If you're like me and believe that RGB is an fps loss I'd recommend the MSI Z490 Unify mobo... features no RGB with a 3rd m.2 slot.

The 10900k is a beast CPU and gives a solid experience. In addition to gaming I do a lot of encoding as well and it's crazy fast.

I built a 9900k based system for CAD last summer. It's fast! A pair of m.2 in a stripe, 128GB of ram and a Quadro 6000M. Runs Forza at max across 3 big screens.

I do the trickledown effect here. CAD station gets the newest and everyone else gets it's castoffs. So I just completed upgrading my daily driver with 6yr old CAD station parts - a 6850k@4.2Ghz w/ 32Gb, a 2080 and a m.2 .

I can run the same CAD benchmark on them both and the 9900k is 80% faster on a timed script type benchmark than the 6850 is.

If you can afford it, the I9 is a quick little ez bake oven. - it's a hot running CPU, plan on watercooling.
