I'm considering buying a gaming desktop for 4K gaming, VR gaming on the HP Reverb G2, possibly working in the Unity game engine, and some other software development. I'm hoping to make this Desktop last 6 or 7 years, possibly with a GPU upgrade and RAM capacity upgrade halfway through that time.

Things I have narrowed down:
CPU: Intel 13600k or 13700k
RAM: 32GB (Should I go with DDR4 or DDR5?)
SSD: 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD (I thought I should go with PCIe 4.0 to take advantage of DirectStorage that might be coming to games in the near future, or should I just choose a PCIe 3.0 SSD instead?)
GPU: From what I understand of VR gaming, I will need at least an RTX 3080 for the games I want to play.

Case: I like these two cases because they have been rated highly in this video from Gamers Nexus(

I'd like an optical drive too, though it doesn't need to be anything fancy.

I'm looking forward to your advice and build suggestions. Thanks!

I'm also using the sticky thread template for asking for build advice from Dark Lord of Tech below.

+1 for the Lian Li Lancool III

With your budget I'd be looking at 1440P IPS high refresh rate monitors.

Intel will release the less expensive locked cpu's along with the B760 boards this coming January 3rd. Keep your eyes peeled on this site and others for the reviews of the i7 13700 / 13700F and the i5 13400 / 13400F. By then DDR5 will have fallen even more in price.

PNY CS2140 2TB M.2 PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe Internal SSD $134.99

Another case to have a look is this one which would free up $50 towards other components such as your gpu.

LIAN LI LANCOOL 216 $99.90
