I7 2600 [non-K] vs E5 2680-V2

Hi just wondering if e5 2680 v2 will be a good upgrade to do , i can source the cpu and a x79 board cheaply , i mainly play a lot of games such as Rust , Gta v , witcher 3 etc and will be looking to play new and up coming titles , i also do a small amount of video editing and use adobe premire and do work on photoshop,just looking to see if this will be an improvement and if the gaming performance will be roughly the same if not better , my current gpu right now is a gtx 970 g1 however i have a gtx 1070 on its way , thanks.

Clock speed usually wins for gaming. 10 slower cores won't be better for gaming than the 4 faster cores in the i7. Rendering would be better with the Xeon. It just depends on what is important to you.

The Xeon would be a downgrade for gaming. Adobe premiere pro seems to favor high clock speeds over more cores. So it might be a downgrade across the board for you.

in gaming how much of a decrease would i expect to see? and what about for the future ? will the more cores be better for the future ?

More slower cores will never be better for gaming. Just like AMD Threadripper isn't better for gaming compared to Ryzen, same with your i7 vs Xeon.

Hmmm my motheeboard is a z68 so how about if i purchase an i7 2700k and try overclock it to over 4.5GHz? will this be a better choice in your opinion? Thanks

Yes, that would be a better choice. I have no idea if 4.5Ghz is a plausible overclock or not.

The 3770k would be a better upgrade and you can upgrade to it if you update your bios. It's slightly slower than the 4770k which is still a good CPU today.
