Hey,

I have an i7-2600k CPU which I have heard is pretty good at overclocking, so rather than get a new CPU (which would require a new motherboard) I am considering overclocking my current one. Now let me tell you my tale of woe. Before touching the overclock I went to stress test with Prime95 Small FFTs. I noticed the idle temps were high and as soon as I started Prime95 the temps rocketed to above 90 degrees! After checking I noticed one of the screws holding the CPU cooler in place had come loose, but I have no idea how long it was like this. After re-attaching it properly (and re-doing the thermal paste) I ran Prime95 again and noticed no difference. I then re-applied the thermal paste again and re-mounted the CPU cooler and am now running Prime95 again, it's been going for about half an hour now. It initially climbed to 75 degrees and is now sitting at just under 80, occasionally reaching 80, 81 but seems pretty stable around 80 (also there's a fair difference between cores; 0 and 3 are mid 70s with 3 slightly higher, while 1 and 2 sit around 79, 80). These still seem rather high for no overclock. I am using Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste and an Arctic Freezer 7 PRO Rev.2 CPU cooler, one 140mm case fan at the front and one at the back (Fractal R5 case). Temps measured with CPUID HWMonitor.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

It is a benchmark program. It is made to work the bleep out of your system. This isn't a day at the beach for your GFX card. This is Ellis Island. There will be heat.

Those temps. are normal for Prime. Would you like to see hotter? http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/intelburntest.html will put...
I was running the latest version (29.7). I have now downloaded 26.6 and am running that. It's been going for a few mins and cores 0 and 3 are ~73 while 1 and 2 are ~77, I suspect they might get to similar temps as before after running for a while longer.

EDIT: 26.6 has been running for half an hour now and cores 0 and 3 are ~71, 72 and cores 1 and 2 are at ~76, 77. These are slightly lower than before but still seem way too high.

What matters more are the temps. while your gaming and its idle temp..
