I7-2600k processor compatibility

So I got an Intel i7-2600K processor for my HP Pavilion 500-023w pc. My pc is telling me that the processor isn't compatible, but I've read elsewhere that I should be fine if I update my BIOS, which I did. It's still saying however that the processor isn't compatible. Did I do something wrong, or is it in fact not compatible?

If you have already updated the BIOS then you may want to check that the chip is seated properly. Also check the chip for any damage or contaminants on the contacts of the chip. I assume you bought it used so there is also the possibility its just broken.

Yes I did, but here's the thing though, when I boot up the pc it tells me it's usual message that the processor is incompatible, but when I press esc, and select continue startup in the menu, then the pc continues to run. It's even telling me what processor it is in msinfo32, plus I've tested several programs, including games, and they are in fact not only running, but running better in fact. Is something wrong on startup? Do I need to change a startup setting?
