I7 2700k + GTX 680 ?

its time for me to upgrade and i dont have patience to wait for ivy bridge and heard a lot of good thing about sandy bridge
Anyway, im going to upgrade this week, im keeping my case, psu and ram and upgrading to :
EVGA Z68FTW mobo
EVGA GeFore GTX 680
i7 2700k

how do these sound? Will my cpu bottleneck my gpu?
Also should i get a water cooler ? i do NOT plan on overclocking anything.
im a gamer, games at 1920x1080.

I have a 2600k along with thounds of happy gamers. You can get away with an i5 but will reap benefits if you do anything else other than gamming in the future.
At current there is no game an i5 can bottleneck any graphics card so you will be fine.

I would suggest buying a 2600k and overclocking just the multiplier to acheive the same clock as a 2700.... you will save money for 1 minutes work.

don't bother with a water cooler if not oc'ing, in fact get a non 'k' version of the i5 or i7 if your not overclocking and save a few $s

Don't "bottleneck" yourself - down the road a 25/2600K and a 212 EVO cooler - will give you the option to crank up the clock.(easily) If it is a gaming maching only the 2500K is the way to go. If you do want hyper threading, the 2700k is only 100MHz faster stock.

Nice combo. Same as mine actually (I plan to pick up a 680 this week). In answer to your question, the GPU, not the CPU, will be the bottleneck in this system. No game as yet maxes out a fast SB.

- if the main purpose is games, don't bother with an i7. You will see no benefit over an i5
- if not overclocking, no point in a fancy cooler

As you are not planning to overclok the CPU, then you won´t need the ´K´, which is intended for overclokers. For gaming you won´t need an i7 2700 either -- an i5 2500 will do the job without bottlenecking anything. On the other hand, if you want t a future proof system, then get a i7 2600, which will be good for other tasks like rendering, etc.

The price difference between a CPU with unlocked multiplier and one with a locked one is a joke. The type of CPU matters if you want to save some money, aka i5 2500k or i7 2600k.

Not going for a 'K' version, even if you don't want to OC, is just not really a money saver, but will probably limit you in the future.

Also you can get a more than sufficient board for half the price of that epeen one.

The i7 3820 will give you a very small performance increase in performance in a gaming system -- if I am not wrong you have to buy a after market cooler, as Intel ships the CPU without a cooler.

Completely correct, also in games even an i5 overclocked will give better performance. You can get away with dual channel RAM which lowers the cost as well.
I would seriously go with an i5 or an i7 and a lower spec motherboard if you are only going for a single graphics card with no overclocking. It's simply a waste of money imo.

How come i have only seen videos w people useing x79 platnforms...is its becuase of drivers/?? I am ordering ASRock z68 xtreme4 w/an i5k series ...will i be able to get a gtx 670 in may and be fine? or do i need ivy bridge...

btw...i have an video card ill pop in till may to get the 670 cause the 660's wont be out till june-sept.

i5-2500k is plenty for a GTX 680 and even for 2 with overclocking.

Ivy keeps being pushed back so go now if you're craving the system.

so i got it today after a weeks wait just for them to get the 680's from the supplier
what i ended up getting was:
Asus Rampage IV Formula BF3
16 GB RAM
EVGA GTX 680
Antec Water Cooling
i7 3820
2TB 7200rpm
120gb intel ssd (SUPER FAST!!!)
Anyway, the temps are really good, getting 25-30 with the cpu and 40 for gpu (its a hot day today

been working heaps but ive had time to install drivers and all that jazzz..
anyway, benchmarked just cause 2 and got an average of: 98 Fps!
it runs beautifully! played for 3 hours ALL MAXED with FXAA on in nvidia control panel and gpu hit 79 degrees and cpu 50
...
Worth the money!

Get the 2600k over the 3820!

NO it will not be bottlenecked, but there is no point of 2011 socket compared to 1155 in terms of gaming performance!

Hard to say w/o a test, which I can't seem to find atm.

However, if that CPU does than any CPU will.

I spose if it does, by the time I ever get 4 way sli, ivy bridge or better will be available to upgrade my PC with anyway.

so I dont think it'll be much of a worry either way
