Ok guys i just upgraded from and i3 2100 on a GA-H67MA-USB-3 mobo. I put the I7 3770k in like showin put the heatsink powered up the computer shut down in about 2 seconds i saw every fan turning except the cpu fan, and it was plugged in. Then the comp just went offline. Then it tried to come back up and the same thing happened it just shut down. I am very new to this but installing a processor was simple enough, im not to sure on whats going on. I have a tr2 600w power supply by thermaltake. I was thinking this may be the problem im not sure I do have a gtx770 hogging some power up but I wouldnt think it would be enough to not make the processor run or the comp to crash. I am not sure about this and I really need some help from some of the guru's here. I thank you in advance and any help wil be greatful.

Solution
simple problem, your motherboard is on the H67 chipset, which does not support Ivy bridge CPUs (intel 3000 series). you would need to upgrade to a z68 chipset motherboard at minimum. I would recommend lookint into H75 or Z77 chipset motherboards.

alternatively, you can return the CPU and try to find a i7 2700. it's only SLIGHTLY slower, but is fully supported by your motherboard

Get a Z77 motherboard because you have a K processor.

Solution

This is wrong. The H67 chipset DOES support Ivy Bridge CPUs. And this particular motherboard DOES support the Core i3-3770K.

@OP: You probably just need to flash the motherboard with the latest BIOS. Do that with the Core i3-2100 installed, then swap in the Core i7-3770K.

good eye, thanks for the catch... I've gotten lazy and forgotten which mobos have gotten the BIOS update over the excitement from Haswell.

@OP, follow Sakkura's advice :)

His motherboard supports ivy bridge. Did you bother to even look it before telling him he needs a new motherboard?

OP you need bios F8 to run your processor

Ok guys thank you for the bios update it worked and the i7 is in and running I appreciate the time and effort into that. I do have a couple of questions though. I upgraded from an I3 2100 same board gtx770 i play world of tanks i would average about 48fps with max settings. I installed the i7 and am getting lower frame rates on max settings around 32 im not sure that this is normal I have upgrade all drivers and latest vid card drivers and still nothing. Im not sure if this is the right spot for this but I thankyou for your time and if so pointing me in the right direction.

After installing windows 7 again it seems to have helped a lot. I do want to ask a question. Would your mobo hinder fps ingame also I know im running the 67 chipset. I just purchased a i7 3770k so if im right I cant put that in an z87 board but I think the z77 will run it. If you guys think it hinders fps let can you please let me know what you think the best mobo in that category is. Im using this computer strictly for gaming. I was looking at the msi z77 but if I can go z87 I will. Also would cpu temps hinder the performance of the cpu? Thanks again guys yall have been great.

Also im curious about heat. Im thinking I need to get a different heatsink for the i7 im pretty sure that heat could hinder performance as well but if im wrong please set me straight, thanks again guys.

After playing a few it started doing the same thing, I took the time to install some hw monitor programs seems that its running at a shocking 93c im shutting it down until later today when I can go get a much needed heatsink, I thank you all for your time and patience with me its been much needed help.

The motherboard shouldn't affect FPS noticeably. It's more likely that it would affect transfer speeds via USB or SATA3, but that's a minor issue at worst.

Your Core i7 (and the old Core i3 too for that matter) would fit into any 7-series motherboard, but not 8-series. So Z77 would work, Z87 wouldn't. The main reason to get a Z77 board would be that it allows you to overclock your CPU, which is a K model and thus technically meant for overclocking (works fine without overclocking, it just costs a little more because overclocking is fully enabled).

As for the temperature, 93C suggests a problem with the cooler. Could be installed wrong, could be too little or too much thermal paste.
