i7 3770k Poor Performance

Hi,

I have i3770k and Z77 Sabertooth Mobo with 8 Gigs of Ram and Manually Set PageFiles (12-23 GB Per Drive)

I also have alienware m15x with i7 940XM. MY Problem is i cant get my Desktop computers performance equal to my lap and it drives me crazy...

Then i opened up task manager of both system and noticed that in my desk it uses only 4 cores most of time (99%) and remaining 4 is always idle. but in lap it distributes loads equally giving great power. Same goes for ram. Lap uses upto 5 GB and desk uses only under 4GB. I hav 64 bit Windows in both.

I overclocked i7 3770k but result is still same. Only if i set proc affinity manually it works.

Any suggestions to how to get this thing work??

try run some benchmark like prime95 or pcmark and see if the result shows desktop underperforms

Run Cinebench 11.5 on both systems. That will give you an accurate performance reading on both. Make sure to find any background processes and get rid of them. http://www.maxon.net/products/cinebench/overview.html scroll down to the very bottom for download link.

If I were you, I would set the pagefile to just one drive (non OS drive preferably). Run Prime95 (will stress CPU), cinebench (will stress GPU) and finally run PCMark for overall performance.

bascially all application performance is very very low. if i run only 1 application it works perfect.. but if i open multiple application it sucks!!

Updating BIOS shouldn't increase performance unless your CPU wasn't supported on the first BIOS and you were lucky and it worked. You can just install the latest version. Do that, and then run Cinebench 11.5 CPU test. The OpenCL test stresses the GPU and CPU, but it gives very inaccurate results. Though the CPU bench is very accurate and it will show you your scores on your laptop and desktop. Prime95 only stresses the CPU to max load. It isn't a performance benchmark and I have no idea why everyone is recommending Prime95. To compare your CPU performance, just use Cinebench 11.5.

Did you update your BIOS? Do that and try again. My 3770k gets almost 8. Also, go into task manager and make sure nothing else is running. You want your CPU usage to be as low as possible before doing the test. You don't need to do that OpenGL test. If you don't have CPU-z, here it is: http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.64-setup-en.exe Open CPUz and at the bottom left corner, tell me what it says for core speed before, during and after the test. When you're not doing the test, the core speed should fluctuate between 1600 and 3900. When you're doing the test, you should be at a constant 3900. After the test should be the same as before the test.

Edit: Also, run the CPU test on your laptop too.

My Lap gave around 3.14 🙁 its i7 940XM for desk, i updated bios, updated some blk cpu freq from 100 to 110 or something like that, increased cpu volt to 1.25 and now it gave me 8.35 (my desk) but i am surprised with my lap as i feel that lap is faster than my desk but these values shows my desk is 2x time faster. really confused!

I wouldn't keep your baseclock that high. It might be unstable meaning you might get some random BSODs or application crashes. I would just reset all your settings to default in the BIOS now that you've updated it and try again. If you want to overclock, adjust the multiplier, not the baseclock.

Sorry, but you're scoring properly. 7.14 is around the performance you should be getting with a couple of background processes. I scored above 8 at 4.2GHz, not at stock. I thought I was at stock when I tested and scored over 8. With some background processes you should score anywhere between 7.0 - 7.5. Why do you feel that your computer is acting slow?
