I7 3820 (2011) vs i7 3770 (1155) please help

Evening everyone,

I recently purchased a Geforce 680 GTX and am looking to upgrade my CPU to replace my current socket 775 setup to prevent an obvious bottleneck.

I will primarily use the system for gaming, general use such as web browsing, and from time to time video editing and 3D design.

Early benchmarks suggest that the 3820 and 3770 are very similar in terms of performance and both the socket 1155 and socket 2011 boards have PCI-E 3.0, however:

- Socket 2011 allows you to take advantage of Quad Channel memory. Will this make a difference?
- Ivy Bridge Extreme may be available for Socket 2011 boards in the future
- 2011 boards are generally.. better than 1155 boards? ...

Given the info above and that my two options will more or less cost the same price which would be the smarter purchase? Socket 2011 + 3820 or Socket 1155 + 3770 when it becomes available later in the month?

If 2011 +3820 turns out to be the better choice overall I will most likely purchase lojng before ivy bridge is released.

The sets (board + cpu + ram) should be similar price wise, so please do not consider price an issue.

Could anyone please recommend a decent cooler for socket 2011? There are plenty of coolers available for Socket 1155, but I have only been able to find a few for socket 2011, such as:

Zalman CNPS12X
Corsair Hydro Series H70

If money is no issue go 2011. If it is go ivy or sandy. Simple as that.

For budget minded people 2011 just isn't worth it specially if your only/mainly gaming. Sandy will actually overclock better then ivy and once both are overclocked SB 2600k can outperform both IB cpu's. Reviewers have stated that many differences between SB and IB are from the z77 boards themselves which give the added performance.

Typically, the 2011 socket is a little more expensive for both motherboard and CPUs. If I were buying today, I would go with either a 3820 or a 3630k. If you don't mind waiting a couple of weeks, I would stick it out and wait for Ivy Bridge to launch - I think the 3770 will be worth it in the long run.

The 3820's stock performance will be similar to the Socket 1155 i7-2600k - the 3820 has a slightly larger cache and the stock clock is slightly higher but the 2600k can make up the difference when overclocked if you wanted to go that route.

Both options will yield good results - it's all a matter of when you need to build, what your budget is and whether you're planning on overclocking. Either way, I would say selecting either processor is going to make you a happy camper

My final niggling doubt is the lastability of Socket 2011.... ie whether it will support Ivy Bridge Extreme next year...

If i do decide upon 2011 I will most likely go for the Asus P9X79 PRO motherboard.

I don't think Intel has announced if they'll be doing a Socket change for IB-E - my best guess is yes, they'll use the 2011 socket but they're infamous for scratching the backs of Mobo manufacturers by requiring a new socket for new chip generations. Here's hoping they'll help us poor techs out

you can see that the 3820 can't even keep up with the current generation of i5s and i7s in gaming. Get the 3770 or the i5 when it comes.

No point in getting socket 2011 for gaming. quad channel memory is not useful. Generally the 2011 platform is only good for workstations and even then you pay a decent premium for very little performance gain.

Can you share what did you end up buying if you don't mind. I am in the similar boat and cannot make up my mind to go for either 2011 or 1155 socket. I have my eyes on i7-3770s and I wanted to make sure it is the best bang for the buck.
