APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: 1-to-2 weeks

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Architectural and Product Viz - 3D Modeling using 3ds Max and Rendering using Maxwell Render and/or VRay. Not really a "gamer" but I could see myself picking up a couple games ie COD4.

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: keyboard, mouse or monitor - although I will eventually upgrade my 17" monitor to a 23/24"

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg.com

PARTS PREFERENCES: Core i7 920 - seems like the right balance between price/performance and seems to perform very well with Maxwell Render (Benchwell.com is a benchmarking site for Maxwell Render).

OVERCLOCKING: I am a noob when it comes to building systems and I have never tried to overclock one before, but I would definitely strongly consider doing it, especially since the i7 supposedly is well suited to it.

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe - I don't think my video card demands are as great as they are for playing some games out there, but some of my scenes can get pretty heavy with geometry and the card needs to be able to re-draw the scene quickly when I pan/zoom/rotate

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1280 x 1024 currently, not sure what the new monitor would be

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: This system will basically be a rendering workhorse - not sure exactly how much work I'll be getting so I don't want to drop a ton of money yet, but would like a path for upgrading at a later date. I have never built my own system before but I do have half a brain and there are so many resources online that I think it is well within my abilities to pull it off.

So far what I have come up with from my research is the following build. I wouldn't mind shaving a couple of dollars off this if possible so any suggestions would be appreciated. Also - do I need a seperate CPU cooler?

Links to build: First the general parts then 2 combo deals for the Case/PSU and the CPU/Mobo/RAM

I hope this is enough information -- thanks for your time/advice. Also, if there are any recommended resources for a first time builder let me know.

Thanks
SD

I couldn't see the wishlist, a common bug lately. It may appear later.

You can get the best performance with these programs out of a workstation card, but an Nvidia gaming card may do OK. You would likely go over budget to get a good WS card.

I really don't care for Crucial RAM any more. How about this deal?

You can get a better PSU with a roomier case that will cool just as well:

Or spend just a bit more for this combo:

I'm guessing your build doesn't actually need 700W any way.

thanks for the replies - sorry about the wishlist not showing, it was shared but it must take a while before it actually is made public on Newegg's site, it is finally showing up at the following link (excluding the CPU/Mobo/RAM combo deal - see below for that).

https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=7128609

you'll see I have updated the PSU to the Corsair per your suggestions, I still do like that xClio case but I have also added two more options - the Antec 900 like you suggested and also the Antec P182. I'll be honest - I'm a little superficial and want a nice, clean looking case - that is why I like the xClio and the P182. I looked through 30-something pages of cases on Newegg and there are a lot of ugly-a** cases out there. Thoughts? Also on the video card, I do think a workstation card is out of the budget at this time so what do you think of the this EVGA GTX 260:

I also updated the CPU/Mobo/RAM combo per your suggestions

Again, thanks for taking the time to review and comment.

Wishlist isn't working for me.

Here's my concerns with the Xclio.
- The space between the forward edge of the board and the HD cage is limited, although it will probably JUST accommodate long cards.
- There are no holes or other ways to route the cables, and the PSU sits above the MB, making for a messy interior once built.

Hi...as you are pretty doubtful that you would go with multiple video cards, then dont invest that much on that mobo...
Get the Gigabyte UD3R...
Here is a revised config, that has better Graphics card, HDD and is cheaper than your previous setup...

i7+ UD3R
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.203725

RAM + Graphics card
OCZ Gold + GTX275
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.197566

Xclio + Corsair 620HX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.201785

WD Black
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319

And not that UD3R doesnt support SLI...A BIOS update can enable SLI on that mobo too...
