i7 4720hq at 99º with prime95... hot enough?

Tried my new clevo p651se with prime95 small fft test.

The cpu reached 99º at half of his cores immediatly..

Isn't that too damn hot? What should I do?

Yes, that's too hot.

At 22C Standard Ambient, here's the typical operating range for Core temperature:

80C Hot (100% Load)
75C Warm
70C Warm (Heavy Load)
60C Norm
50C Norm (Medium Load)
40C Norm
30C Cool (Idle)

Do NOT run any versions of Prime95 later than 26.6. Here's why:

Core i 2nd, 3rd and 4th Generation CPU's have AVX (Advanced Vector Extension) instruction sets. Recent versions of Prime95, such as 28.5, run AVX code on the Floating Point Unit (FPU) math coprocessor, which produces extremely high temperatures. The FPU test in the stability testing utility AIDA64 shows similar results.

Prime95 v26.6 produces temperatures on 3rd and 4th Generation processors more consistent with 2nd Generation, which also have AVX instructions, but do not suffer from thermal extremes due to having a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader and a 35% larger Die.

Run only Small FFT’s for 10 minutes.

Use Real Temp to measure your Core temperatures, as it was designed specifically for Intel processors: Real Temp - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2089/real-temp-3-70/

Your Core temperatures will test 10 to 20C lower with v26.6 than with v28.5.

did i damage my cpu? it was only at 99% for 1 minute at most, the beginning, the rest of the test was at 92

I immediatly turned it off, what should i do now? Send it back to RMA?

It was assembled by the store, I can't possibly know that, but even if it's a stock cooler, it's not supposed to reach such temperatures, right?

Is there any other software i could test it with?

The stock cooler is marginally adequate, however, it's likely that one of the four push-pins which latch the cooler to the CPU has popped loose, resulting in high core temperatures.

The processor will "Throttle" at 100C for thermal protection, which is why you're seeing 99C.

I recommend that you take your rig back to where you purchased it, and have them re-attach the cooler.

He is referring to an i7 4720HQ . This is a notebook processor 2.6ghz with a boost of 3.4-3.6ghz.

I have this exact processor in my acer v15 nitro black laptop and it hits 95+ degrees C when under a relatively heavy load. Unfortunately this chip does run extremely hot and when you pair this chip with a very thin laptop like the nitro black - it is extremely difficult to keep it cool.

I've even tried removing the thermal paste on mine and reapplying higher quality paste. Still pushes 95C under load. You can reduce the cpu power limit to reduce temperatures, but that will remove the boost feature (wont exceed 2.6ghz).

Just go to the power settings in windows. If you right click on the battery icon on the bottom right of your taskbar, you can get there quicker than through the control panel.

Go to CPU performance under your power settings and set the max power to 99% instead of 100%.

My Clevo P650SE gets hot as well. Locked the multiplier at 32T using ThrottleStop and disabled BD PROCHOT to be able to game without framerate drops.

Isn't the way it's supposed to be IMO, so I sent an email to the manufacturer (Dutch Clevo rebrander) explaining this isn't acceptable.

Will keep you posted.

PS. My GTX 980M is awesome though. Max core OC with 347.88 drivers without a major temp change 😀 (now I know why NVIDIA tried to disable driver OC 😉
