Hey tom's hardware community!

I've got a small issue I was just curious about. I recently bought a new laptop, the MSI GE72 2QD(Apache Pro).

I was running HWMonitor while gaming (cs:go) this evening and saw the CPU getting up to 91 as the max on one core and 89/90 on the rest. I reset the min/max values several times throughout my gaming session to be sure it wasn't a random spike and sure enough it would creep up to around 90 every time.

I know that this CPU (i7-4720HQ) has a max temp of 100, but I'm still concerned that this may be too hot. If this is a normal temperature to game at so be it, but I just wanted to make sure now so I can get it looked at if it's not.

Thanks for your help!

I always recommend using a cooling pad when gaming on a laptop as it is a situation where high heat can be produced. With that being said, 90°C does seem to be high (see here for comparison https://youtu.be/59WzUNrIsMI?t=5m5s other reports are similar) What you will want to do (once warranty period is over since MSI uses seals) is replace the thermal compound with a high quality one that is applied properly or, conversely, without having to run like that, contact your retailer about possible exchange or repair or...

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to make a ticket with MSI support to get it checked out.
