Giving my Asus Maximus Hero Vii a last life with upgrades.
I currently have the i7-4770K CPU, but looking to maybe max out with an i7-4790K.
I play 1080p with a 144Hz no sync monitor, would be nice to get 120FPS on things like Tomb Raider, Splinter Cell, etc.
What do people with some experience think about the MSI gaming X range of RTX Supers 2060/2070/2080 with 4770K or 4790K?

So far I think the butter zone is the 2070 Super (maybe the 2060 Super), I wonder if a 4770K and/or the 4790K would bottleneck it?

Currently running GTX780-DU2OC in SLI, but looking to get away from it because only about 50% of what I play supports SLI. I believe my SLI is equivalent to a GTX 1660 Super, which is just over half the price of an RTX 2060 Super.

Where I live:
1660 Super: $500
2060 Super: $850
2070 Super: $1050
2080 Super: $1300
Buy a used i7-4790K: $300-$400

I am looking at the MSI gaming versions only (I have a black theme with red LED and looking to use the LED's on the MSI gaming versions as red)

Interested in peoples thoughts please.
Thanks in advance. :)

I don't know whether your CPU will bottleneck or not at higher refresh rates. That said, I was about to recommend you the 2060 Super, but seeing as you plan on upgrading to a 1440p monitor at some point down the road, the 2070 Super or 2080 Super will suit you better. Shadow of the Tomb raider is a very GPU intensive game and getting a 2070 super of better will allow you to run at a more or less locked 60 fps at 1440p.

Hi man

Here are my thoughts:

I wouldn't upgrade your 4770K to 4790(K), unless it's free or nearly free
the performance jump is really small, also the 4790(K) runs notoriously hot, so you would need a decent cooling just to run at stock, let alone OC. (if you have a good cpucooler, you are covered:) )

I have the 2070 non super MSI armor and i am very happy with it, runs everything i throw at it

both 4770 and 4790 flavours might bottleneck a 2060/2070 slightly depending on the game you are playing
But it will still churn out gorgeous visuals, and smooth gameplay, so who cares
you can always upgrade mobo and cpu at a later time

but for now the I7 4th gen are still decent gpu's, i wouldn't upgrade for anything less then
ryzen 3600 or I5 8600

TL;DR:

NO to cpu upgrade
YES to GPU upgrade

Thanks for the comment. :)

Yeah, What started the thoughts is I was about to repaste my GTS V8 cooler to overclock the 4770K, so the cooler is "decent" enough to live until it dies with my mobo. I just thought since I am repasting it might have been easier to swap to the 4790K instead of overclocking, and the cooler could run on either.

As for the graphics card, I plan to carry that to my next rig, so looking for something that can run 120FPS 1080p now, and then 60FPS at 1440p when I build my next rig in a few years. :)

Seems like a waste to me to play 1080p on a 2070

Yeah, the GTX 780 DC2OC was a great card when I bought it, only 5 years ago. I had planned to SLI, and did, but SLI didn't turn out to be such a hit as they predicted. Shadow of Tomb Raider wasn't even SLI supported!!! Maybe the same will happen to the 20XX supers by the time I buy a 1440p monitor is 3-4 years!

Just sharpened my searches:
2060 Super $715
2070 Super $1050

It's harder than trying to pick the stock market! lol

Ohhhhhh, after more research, would like to see if anyone has the knowlegde as I have pretty much settled on the 2070 Super, but in the last hour found out Asus has an LED one as well! The ROG Strix 2070 Super. (and 2060 super)

It is more ($200-$300) than the MSI one where I live. Does anybody have any ideas as the pros/cons comparing them?

Am I missing something? Why is Asus so much more for the same card?

(MSI rtx 2070 super gaming x trio vs Asus ROG Strix rtx 2070 super OC) or 2060 super MSI/Asus

Thanks sizzling. Hey I am narrowing down my graphics card, but I just realized MSI has FIVE variations of the 2070 Super, but as far as I can tell, four are the same power, but the Z trio is the best. Does anyone know if there are any real-world differences between them? Why have 3 fans if the performance is the same as two fans, etc.???

https://www.msi.com/Graphics-Cards#?tag=GeForce®-RTX-2070-SUPER™

It's doing my head in! In the comparison all specs are the same except the Z Trio which is 15.5Gbps vs all the others which are 14Gbps. Does the clock 1770MHz vs 1800Hz really make a difference?

I know how to read benchmarks but the differences between their 5 cards seem so MINOR, I wonder what is the point? Am I missing something here?

FOR EXAMPLE, the Gaming X and Gaming X Trio both have 14Gpbs and 1800MHz. All specs are the same. So what is the point of getting the three fan one when it just impedes airflow through the case more due to it's larger form/size!?
