i7 4770k @ 4.2 with the dual intelligent processors 5 software, it's all automatic. Hyper 212 EVO, back and side fans. I was getting a lot of BSODs recently so I decided to put new thermal compound (Arctic MX-2) and clean out the dust that has collected. My room is pretty hot, got an underroof room, the roof heats up a lot during the day. I was idling at 40C - 45C, and I ran Prime95 and temps go up to high 80C or so. Is this alright, or should I be worried about something?

TJ Max is 100C, if your processor reaches this temperature you could experience hardware failure. General rule is you shouldn't get into the 90's Celsius. 80's Celsius is perfectly safe/normal for an air cooled Intel processor, especially for an overclocked load.
Ambient temperature also does have an impact on CPU temperature, and case airflow setup can have a considerable effect on this. I've seen maybe 3-4 degree differences at idle from having my door shut all day versus open all day.

It should be fine as is, but you could always try to reseat the CPU cooler, clean it off well first and reapply thermal paste properly (not saying you didn't). MX-2 isn't the best TIM, MX-4 is a bit better but probably not to the point it would be...
Most 4770k's should be able to run a little higher than that so there is something wrong if you are having problems at 4.2ghz it could be the software, RAM, a faulty or weak CPU, or a combination of things. Try running windows memory diagnostic to eliminate that as a problem.
