i7-4770K vs. i5-4670K for gaming

I've been seeing on multiple posts that people give the i5 a higher rank than the i7 for gaming. Doesn't clock speed matter? Don't get me wrong, I love intel, but I don't think that the i5 is better than it's brother. That can't be right?

For gaming yes (because it is a better value) because 99% of games don't take advantage of HT. the 4770 is basically a 4670 with HT

They do run about the same. Benchmarks comparing the two show at the most ~10 FPS difference in favor of either; depending on the game. If you can clock them the same you'll not see any difference between the two, in games that is.

The i5 is great for gaming, and if you still want the clock speed of the i7, OC it to 3.6 or more. I got mine to 4.0 without even trying that hard.

Get an i7 is you want to do any video rendering, 3D modeling, or "workstation like" tasks. We aren't against it, but for gaming paying the extra $100 just for HT isn't worth it.

Guilty as charged. Haha. I knew I didn't necessarily need that much power. For the money I was pouring into it though; there wasn't a snowball's chance in Hell it was going to have an i5. I wanted POWER. Lol

I'm not against the idea of a 4770K. Your mistake was asking which was better for gaming in your original post. With respect to gaming, yes, the 4670K is just as good as the i7. It might be better than the i7 in some, and worse than the i7 in others. Until game developers can utilize HT efficiently the i5 will do just as good. After such time the i7 will probably take the crown. Simply put, the i7's fifteen minutes of fame isn't quite here just yet.

I'd say it comes down to how often you upgrade. Right now, very few games take advantage of the hyper-threading, however, in the future programs will be better threaded.

I built my desktop in Dec. 2010 and don't have any intention of upgrading the CPU anytime soon(GPU sure, but my CPU is plenty powerful for my needs). From the activity levels, BF3 and Rift seem to use the hyper-threading on my CPU.

If you don't plan on upgrading for at least a couple years and can afford the difference, I'd get the 4770k. I know many people will hate me saying this, but, many PC games these days are console ports and the current gen consoles are 8-cores. So, logic would tell me that the ports should be pretty well threaded.

It's not "future proofing" it's just adding some longevity.

Haha got me there. I got mine because I do a fair bit of media encoding/editing and for bragging rights. I knew I didn't NEED it for gaming but I wanted one.
