i7-4770K vs i5-4670K

I am going to upgrade my computer so besides a new motherboard I need to get a new CPU. I am coming from the AMD phenomenon II x4 955 BE and I wish to move into Intel, Now I am debating on the two since i7 has hyper threading and even though most programs won't utilize it, I still wish to have it since it will be a whiles before I upgrade my PC again. So anyways another reason I want the i7 is because of the 8 logical cores which I heard does help. The thing I am debating is if there is any real difference. I do not wish to spend a lot of money on a cpu that is slightly better performance then the other one. I mostly do a lot of multitasking will have Word open, netflix, and a lot of internet related stuff, other programs and programming and intense gaming (BF4). So is the i7 that much more better? I looked both those models up here

and this shows a good difference, while another benchmark site shows they barley differ in performance by maybe a few %

Here is a benchmark for you. The is7 is media oriented (photo/video editing etc.), and poses no "real" difference with the i5 after reading what your going to be using it for. If I were you I would check out the i5-3570. That is another amazing processor that is a little older, but it is advised skipping the 4670k upgrade purely because of the fact that the i5-3570 is faster and better. Another thing is, always make sure that your processors are Haswell. Good luck!

Ok I will check out the links when I get home, and are you saying the i5-3570 is faster than what I chose? I am being told always go with the newer architecture in CPU design, especially Intel for increase performance and stability. Another thing is, I am guessing the i7 is either too powerful for my needs? and also When you say, " Another thing is, always make sure that your processors are Haswell" but you told me to check out the i5-3570 which is not Haswell (so I am told 😛)

Ivy Bridge is still good, but for someone has a old CPU like you, better to upgrade to Haswell. This way you'll have a extra upgrade path to Broadwell when it comes out.
Based on the programs your going to run including games, a Core i5 will your best pick and cost a lot less than a Core i7.
If it's just running those programs no games like BF4, then a Core i3 will work well too.

Well my computer is not that old 😛 the mobo and cpu sure, but my ram, video card and etc are high end >😀 but anyways, so everyone mostly seems to agree on the i5. What are i7's mostly used for?

Correct me if I am wrong, but the i5-3570k is the equivalent of the 4670k Haswell CPU.

Yes you are absolutely correct, Intel used millions of dollars on research and production of the Haswells for no purpose.



Yes

The average 4670K overclock better than the average 4770K I heard. And Haswell runs hot. Really hot.
