Hi

The temperatures of my i7 4770s idle/low load (<=4%, eg: browsing) are from 43-49C after a BIOS update. Before the BIOS update the temps were about 47-53 C.
Also after BIOS update the turbo is limited to 3500 Mhz reducing the heat to about 82C vs 92C on full load using Prime95 in ~1-2mins.

When playing a game the temps goes around 60-70C.

I am using the integrated graphics too.

I have an ASUS Z87-C motherboard.

I am using the stock fan.

Those temps are normal for 4770S (notice the S)?
.

Solution
yes sadly they are normal temps for the stock intel HSF.
personally with any high end CPU (like i5 or i7) i alway spend a bit extra and get a good after market HSF. it keep the cpu cooler, makes your pc running better and helps you get a longer life out off your CPU.

the stock intel cooler is not as good as the stock amd coolers so your processor will run reasonably hot.

get a good aftermarket cooler and it should bring the load temps down to around 50 if your case is well ventilated and your ambient temps are reasonable.

I don't think it will affect the life of CPU if it's below 100C. Anyway, nowadays the CPU throttles when reaching high temps.

The problem is how on earth I have such "idle" temps even for a stock cooler?!
I saw other 2 non-S 3rd gen i7 (3770) and have the "idle" temps on around 50-52C with stock cooler..

I mean what the?!

Temps were read with AIDA and/or RealTemp.
I would like to keep a low profile heat-sink + cooler.
PS: note it's the S version, so it's not overclockable.. I am not a fan of overclock anyway.

BTW ambient temperature is ~29C-30C. I also have 2 coolers (120mm) on the case. One on front (for my HDDs) and one on back. The PSU is on the bottom of the case.

Thanks for the replies guys!

mauller07 I don't think that the cpu surface was convex but flat..

Isn't anyone else using this type of CPU with stock cooler? How's the temperatures? In the same range?

It is possible that the temps are kinda high because I'm using the integrated GPU?

you would be surprised at how convexed and concave some cpu heatspreaders can be, it is why some people sand the surface smooth to increase contact.

just place a ruler edge over the cpu heat spreader at different angles and you can see how flat the surface is, it is hard to tell by eye.

mauller07 I see. Maybe I will try to re-apply thermal paste.. Thanks

Using AIDA's Stability Test the temperatures goes to 92C (Tj. Max of S-version) and the CPU throttles down a lot. I guess *this* is not normal even if I use the stock cooler and integrated graphics.

I have 2 coolers on the case. One intake on the front of the case (purchased for cooling the hot 4 hdds+1ssd) and one exhaust on the back of the case. Both are 120x120mm. No side or top coolers. Here are the actual temps and RPMs.

Motherboard Name Asus Gryphon Z87 / Maximus VI / Sabertooth Z87 / Z87

Temperatures
Motherboard 36 °C (97 °F)
CPU 42 °C (108 °F)
CPU Package 46 °C (115 °F)
CPU IA Cores 45 °C (113 °F)
CPU GT Cores 43 °C (109 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #1 44 °C (111 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #2 45 °C (113 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #3 42 °C (108 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #4 43 °C (109 °F)

Cooling Fans
CPU 1235 RPM
Chassis #1 559 RPM
Chassis #2 507 RPM

Hi,

First time posting here, and I can't help to chime in about the 4770s' temperature. It's "reassuring" to see that others are getting similar temperatures on the stock HS&F with the 4770s.

My 4770s idles around 40-45; and when it hit it up with prime95, it goes up to 91 celsius!

I was under the impression that the s-version is to run with a lower wattage and cooler?

Unfortunately, not many people uses the 4770s and the majority of the benchmarks are focused on the 4770 and 4770k.

i bought the s-version thinking that it'll run cooler, but apparently not!

I called up Intel telling them about this and the support guy says he doesn't recommend running the proc over 7x degrees on load.

FYI, my case set up is a Corsair Obsidian 600D, with an intake at the front, and an exhaust at the back and top.

Hi

Thank you for posting here! Glad that I'm not alone hehe.. You're right, the S version is darn rare.

Hope some other 4770s users are sharing their experience with stock cooler.

Have you tried to re-apply the thermal paste? If yes, what did you tried?
Also, do you use the integrated graphics? I do.
