i7 4790 bottlenecking my new 1080ti

so i just assembled my machine , put in a strix 1080ti OC version and started up my fav. online game: DOOM

everything works insanely well however if i play on open GL, i get slowdowns, picture freezes for 0.5-1.5 sec then continues and fps drops between 100-130... stuttering too.

cpu usage around 90% gpu usage 70% ish.

if i switch to vulkan, it's total smooth 144 fixed fps, though cpu usage still at arund 80-85%...

i feel it's a bottleneck, am i right?

Doom has some wierd issues running on opengl sometimes with certain hardware. Your 4790 is a capable cpu so no reason to upgrade really. Also you are getting smooth fps and the cpu is not at 100% when using vulkan so you are fine.

@ jaslion, sadly vulkan is frequently crashing it's a game issue not related to specific hardware, so that is why i would prefer openGL, but it's just not working as it should

note: my old GPU was a gtx 980 and on " medium" settings same resolution, i had 80-90 fps on Open GL with no problems whatsoever. No slowdowns, no freezing, no stuttering. it started with the 1080ti

Estimable
If the CPU usage doesn't actually hit 100% followed by an immediate FPS drop then it's not the CPU. I would try some other intensive games and see if it happens in them as well. Sounds like an issue with the game or driver issue. It's probably the game if other games run smooth.

I wanted to upgrade my rig but I was also buying a HTC Vive so my upgrade paath needed to be an informed one. I needed to make sure my socket type was too far out of the loop. 9 months to save money. 9 months to research. Should I upgrade my CPU, board and RAM and GPU or just the GFX card. This

is what I had. And this

is what I have now. The 4790K is the only CPU I'd upgrade to at the moment. Another 2 years and then... The 4790K isn't a choke point. The GPU's temp. in game is 30-49c depending on the game. Nvidia's GPU Boost 3.0 likes a cooler GPU. I think the 1080Ti has me covered for about 5 years. It was worth the cost of admission.

Interesting. I have a 4790k@ 4.7 and a water cooled 1080ti at 2000 megahertz playing at 1440p. I play Doom as well on nightmare settings and it Maxes out my 144 megahertz monitor in Vulcan. see rig in sig. Doom also uses a lot of RAM. How much RAM do you have

16gb of RAM for doom is preferable

So , i have 16 GB RAM and in fact on vulkan my performance is awesome, 144fps on maxed out settings, 1440p, but if i go Open GL my fps drops to 80, and i have insane freezing up for seconds, lag, frame drops, frametime spikes.

note: i will check, but i don't remember any suspicious RAM usage difference in Vulkan/OpenGL

These issues also seem to happen in witcher 3, where my performance is great, 70-80 fps on max 1440p settings, however it's freezing, lagging for some reason... i dont know why xD

But i decided tomorrow evening i will wipe the whole system and reinstall everything... my windows 10 is 3 years old

@ theonerm6 no , i don't have controller :S
