Hello, coming to the forums as a last resort before I go and bring my PC into a micro center or shop somewhere. So, as the title says, I have an i7 4790, that is running hot. Ridiculously hot. Running Arma 3 I average 95-100 degrees Celsius, and the same goes for Insurgency, GTA V, and even Shredsauce, an in-browser Unity 3D game. I genuinely have no idea what could be causing this, I have just reapplied thermal compound to the processor after noticing these problems, and have triple checked to make sure I've left everything as it was, functional, and clean. Regardless of the cheap fixes/maintenance, I can't seem to change my temperatures. The weirdest part is, these are only when I'm gaming.

Every game I play royally screws my processor, yet when idle, it runs at the normal temps for a 4790, high 30s to mid 40s. I have tried multiple different temp monitors, such as RealTemp and Open Hardware, and they read roughly the same, only with slight variations from each other, usually as large as 1-3 degrees. I don't understand what more I can do other than request a refund, as I've just built this PC 2 months ago, and noticed the problem about 3 weeks into gaming with it.

All other hard ware components are cool as can be, which leads me to believe it can't possibly be my case, a Versa H22. All fans are working correctly, all filters are cleaned regularly. I do have a good amount of dust that I wipe off very occasionally, but I doubt that could be the culprit for these massive changes. Just for reference, I've read that the safe and normal temperatures while gaming for the 4790 are mid 60s to 70s.

In conclusion, I hope you guys can lead my to the main cause, or even fix my issues. I appreciate you taking the time to sift through my novice knowledge and read.

74F room temp should be no issue at all.

Two possibilities, the pre-applied paste on the cooler has been compromised, or your CPU has a defect where the IHS is not evenly contacting the CPU die internally.

You can try to wipe off the stuff that comes on it, and put some good stuff on yourself. If that doesn't work, your CPU package is faulty and should be replaced under warranty.

After delving even further into the forums, I'm hearing a whole lot about how the stock cooler is pretty much inadequate for any stressful work, and that the ambient room temp is a major player when it comes to temps. My room happens to be the hottest in my entire house, yet I don't have a solid read for the average. I would guess it's anywhere from about 74 F to 78. so yeah, it's hot as balls. I do have a large industrial-esque fan next to me and my pc, but that hasn't done much for the PC, if anything. Looking to maybe buy a 212 Evo and see how that pans out.
