Hi Guys!

so i have this cpu (i7-4790 non K)
I'm going to use this cpu for some experiments for school purposes.
So i needed a motherboard that is cheap enough for this experiment.

Is there any chance that h81 and/or b85 (obviously these boards are the cheapest in the market) boards will work on my cpu without doing bios update?

Solution
all you should need to do is look at the boards cpu list to see if the chip is listed and what bios its supported under ?? not that hard ..

[example ]

1150 Core i7 i7-4790K(C0) Haswell-R 4.0GHz 8MB 88W All
1150 Core i7 i7-4790S(C0) Haswell-R 3.2GHz 8MB 65W All
1150 Core i7 i7-4790(C0) Haswell-R 3.6GHz 8MB 84W All
1150 Core i7 i7-4790T(C0) Haswell-R 2.7GHz 8MB 45W All

shows those 4790 chips are supported under all bios and no bios flash is nessary . works right out of the box

same here as well

1150 Core i7...

any board from any brand you like should have a support list just like them

Solution

sorry! I am just confused because of some forums/article i have read.
Some saying that all h81 and b85 need bios update to run i7 4790. (past thread here in tomshardware)
And there are some website saying that there are boards which supports this cpu.

I just want to make sure (100%) that I get the right board due to limited time.
well, anyway. thank you so much =) appreciate it a lot.

''Some saying that all h81 and b85 need bios update to run i7 4790.''

yes that can be true as well and why you look that stuff up on the boards support pages as you seen not all require that seeing them asrock boards show the 4790 works under ''all'' bios

heres my lesson on that -- if you buy a board that the bios on it is unknown all ways count on it to be its first release bios

now say you get a board that does require bios 2.10 for the 4790 to work but the board has 1.00 as its first release bios

now you order that board and it come to you with the 1.00 bios on it then you would now need a supported cpu that works under bios 1.00 in order to flash to 2.10 for your chip to work

so I all ways count on any board to have its first release bios on it unless I know something in advance ...

[for example ]

asus
Core i7-4790 (3.6Ghz, 4C, HT, L3:8M, HD Graphic, 84W, rev.C0) ALL 0505

now this board needs bios 0505 foir the 4790 to work but its first release bios was 0210

now say you order that board from newegg you have no way of knowing what bios is on the board could be 0505 then it could be 0210 ??

the one thing your guaranteed is if nothing else it going to have the first release bios on no matter what then lets say that is what you do get

so now you would need a cpu that work under the 0210 so you can flash to the 0505 then you can use your 4790 if not you may be stuck with nothing that's going to work

that's what i'm afraid of.
I dont have any haswell cpu that can be supported by the bios first releases to flash it to the newest supported version.
and i cant't afford to lose that much time, flashing the bios to the supported version.

so until now, manufacturers are releasing boards that have its bios first release version?
so there isn't a way to find out the bios version base on outside package?

Maybe the safest way to get h81 or b85 is to go to a store and ask the technician himself?

thing is as long as you buy a board that the 4770 you want to use is supported under ''all' or the first release your good ?

like them 2 asrocks I used as a example the 4770 is good right out of the box no matter what bios it comes to you with the 4770 shows supported under ''all'' from its first to the latest .. with them you don't need to falsh at all

this is why you have to look only time you got that flashing risk is when its not listed under ''ALL'' or first release ..

''Maybe the safest way to get h81 or b85 is to go to a store and ask the technician himself''

you could do that as long as they put any changes on the box showing what bios is on the board like a sticker stating all that ? some manufactures do that ?? if the boards box don't have a revision change sticker on it I still would assume it got its first release from the factory ??

thank you for your help.
btw, I really bought a board and it is ASUS B85M-G.
And it's working well and doesn't need to be flashed.

thanks again. now i can start with my project.
