Hey Guys,

I am building a 900$ pc for a friend. His wife is a ship designer and she needs to occasionally work from home. It will also be used for light video editing and gaming is not a priority. So should i get an i7 4790/6700 or save some money by getting an i5 6400 and spend the rest on a GPU like the quadro k 420/620 ?. Any suggestions are welcome and thanks in advance.

Solution
I suggest using a i3-6100 which has very strong single core performance.
Only if there will be heavy use of multithreaded apps would a i5 or I7 be better.
Buy a Z170 based motherboard to allow for future upgrades.
M-ATX is a good size and a enthusiast motherboard is not needed.

Skylake integrated graphics is quite good so no discrete graphics card seems really necessary.
One can always add a discrete graphics card if gaming becomes a priority.

Do buy a quality psu in the 550-650 range to allow such a future upgrade.
Seasonic would by my preference for quality.

The key to good performance is a SSD for windows and apps.
240gb is a good size, but with ssd costs so low, consider using a 500gb ssd.
Samsung EVO is very good.

If you will need bulk storage for video files which can be large, use a WD red of suitable capacity.

For a M-ATX case, I like the Silverstone PS-07 or TJ-08e.
They are more compact and well designed.

Solution

Thanks for the help. I did some research and it does seem like CAD software depend more on higher clock speed than no of cores.
