i7 4790 vs i7 4790k

Looking to buy one of these processors but most places i look the 4790k is not being sold any more? what is this reason for this? Also need to buy it on finance but cant find the i7 4790k so is it worth just buying the 4790 or save up and buy the 4790k? Thanks.

The only difference between the two is the ability to overclock.

If you want to overclock, then save up some more. If not, then save the extra cash and buy a cheaper motherboard which doesn't support overclocking.

It's really up to you to determine whether the extra performance increase from overclocking is worth the extra cash.

No one sells them anymore because the 6700k and 7700k have been out for so long, there's not really any reason to buy them new anymore

Just bought a motherboard with a lga 1150 socket as that was my old cpu, now im looking to upgrade and need a lga 1150 socket as i dont want to buy another motherboard.

Doesnt the 4790k come with 4mhz already? and the 4790 is 3.6 normal and 4 boosted?

They're nearly identical in terms of performance out of the box, it'll boost up to 4GHz when it needs to anyway.

You're correct. The k version is significantly faster than the normal version at default speeds already since it starts at 4.0GHz and boosts to 4.4GHz. People have been able to overclock the 4790k to 5GHz speeds.

That's a very silly standard to use, a good OC would be considered 4.7GHz on a 4790k, you're being unrealistic.
4.7GHz is the max I would go, above that it tends to get unstable.
There's always people that try to push CPUs to 5GHz and fail miserably, or go through heaps of chips in order to get there.
It's all dependent on the silicon lottery and what the quality of your chip is, not a good comparison.

Even without the overclock, the 4790k is already clocked higher than the 4790. So even if your statement is true... 4.7GHz is quite a big jump in performance. The 2 chips are not identical in terms of performance from your previous statement.

I did say at stock settings out of the box that they were "near identical" because they are, the performance out of the box is extremely similar, and hardly noticed.

Okay, sounds good, it's a perfectly good purchase anyway, unless you were planning on doing heavy OCing it's the better option.

As someone who owns an i7 4790, no worries, it's still a very strong processor and will be for another few years.
