I built this PC 7 years ago and haven't had any problems with BSOD or shutdowns.

16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance
Asus Z97-A Intel Z97, S1150, DDR3
Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor
Corsair Hydro Series H100i All-in-One Cooler
Artic silver 5 thermal paste
3GB Asus Radeon R9 280X DirectCU II

Recently it has started to crash with the attached message - see link to pic

I removed the cooler, reapplied artic silver 5 thermal paste (it was the one I used 7 years ago) and refitted the cooler.

When I run realtemp97 the CPU temps are all 62C on idle, when I start any programme the CPU temps rise to 88C and then it crashed with the BSOD.

The cooler fans are all working - the Corsair fans are going at max 2200 rpm.

Do I just assume the chip has gone and I need to buy a new one?

Is there any way of monitoring the Corsair cooler to check it is working?

Anything else to check - I've looked at event viewer but from what I see it just says kernel shutdown.

What 1150 chip to buy and see if that fixes the temp issues? The i4790K CPU seems pretty expensive now.

Solution
At idle, your cpu temperature should be in the 10-15c, over ambient range.
62c. indicates a problem with your cooler.
Possibly you did not remount it well.
More likely is that the pump is failing or that some fluid has been lost.
If so, replace the H100i.

If your case has 160mm height available, a simple tower type cooler with a 120mm fan will cool just as well.

I suggest a noctua NH-U12s on sale for $62:
