i7 4790k compatible with h81m-k

The title says it all. I was also wondering if I buy the i7 4790 without the k series would I get the same performance as I'm not going to overclock

The 4790K is listed as supported in the latest BIOS, but most of the other Haswell refresh CPUs have this note:

*Before using the new Intel 4th Gen Core processors, we suggest that you first download the BIOS updater for new Intel 4th Gen Core Processors and then update the BIOS using this tool.

You'll probably be fine though. Chances are good that even if it comes with an older BIOS, it'll still boot, it just won't display the processor model correctly.

You may need to do a BIOS update first depending on how old the board is in order to support the second generation haswell processors. But yes either would work.

Yes, although you may need to update the BIOS on the motherboard. Gaming performance would be similar, just go with the cheaper CPU since you won't be overclocking. If you have a dedicated GPU another option could be the Xeon E3 1231 V3.
