I recently built a rig with an i7 4790K cooled by a cooler master hyper 212 evo. It idles at around 30-33c but whenci ran intel burn test i peaked out at around 100c. I know that these chips seem to do that a lot. While gaming the hottest temp i got was 71c and it was after going into a heavily populated area in an MMO. Are these temps normal?

Solution
That's still a little high. It really isn't enough paste, it's tricky but you have to get it just right. If you take the heatsink off, I'm willing to bet it won't have spread to cover the whole hot spot.

I am at work right now but i can do that when i get home. Is this cooler enough to cool this chip? I know its not a faulty chip because i had a h100i on it and got pretty good temps, but watercooling makes me nervous

Closed loops leak very rarely, I was hesitant to get an H60 at first, but there's a really low chance of anything happening. The Hyper 212 Evo should be plenty powerful enough, though, so that shouldn't be the issue unless you're overclocking.

Im not overclocking it, ive read that my mobo could be overvolting it as i have it set to auto in the bios. Ive also read that as long as i keep it under 80c im good. There seems to be a lot of people hitting 100c in stress tests with this chip.

Like i said earlier watercooling makes me nervous, ive done it before and havnt had problems but this time around i didnt want to go that route. Ive heard from a lot of people saying both coolers are good for this chip

Will the NH D14 fit into a HAF X? I know i would have to get new RAM but my cpu cutout on the back of the mobo tray doesnt line up with the socket, wouldnt that short out the mobo since the back bracket would be touching the tray?

Sir,

HAF X is a full tower PC Case which has clearance for CPU Coolers upto 190mm whereas NH-D14 has height of 160mm. See the pic below from Google Images:

What about the back bracket? Im on my phone now so i cant post a pic but part of the bracket goes between the mobo tray and the mobo itself. Wouldnt the metal on metal contact cause the mobo to short?

There is a bit i can do to try and get my temps down woth my current setup so im going to try that first, notably turning down the voltage and re-seating the cooler, if that doesnt work ill get a better cooler. Again ill post pics when i get home of the thermal paste

I am home now and I checked my Voltage and it was 1.072 @ 4.00 GHz, I switched every option to adaptive as somebody else said it helped with temps, I also heard that a Bios update could help fix temps, so I am looking for bios 1504 for my Maximus VII Hero mobo. I also ran Aida64 stress test and the temp peaked out at 85 degrees after 5 minutes, this is better than the Intel Burn test result but is still kind of hot. Any ideas?

Not yet, I wanted to see if I could lower the temps further without remounting, I ran some other benchmarks (Aida64 and Intel Extreme testing utility) and full load temps didn't exceed 85c which is still high but better than 100c,Ill remove the Heatsink tomorrow and post pics of the paste on it. I will be remounting tomorrow though using the rice method and post the results as its pretty late here and I work tomorrow. I

Hi Sneakyone, have been through this with the core i7-4790kOk and we have managed to drop temps. Something to do with Bios settings... You will see some threads here about this already. So after looking at things in a bit more detail for me to get the temps of the i7-4790k to run at mid 20's idle and mid 60's 100% load in prime95 at 4.4ghz, 4.5 or (4.7GHZ temps reach 80 degrees) without touching voltage fully stable, (screen cap below) I have to run the following settings in bios on Maximus Hero vii (should work on other boards with similar setup).

Everything in auto except the following:

AI - Manual
BLK - 100.0 sure you could push this ever so slightly
Multi-core Enhancement - Disabled
CPU Core Ratio - Sync All Cores
44 i have set to 44 but have tested at 45 no problems (4.5ghz)
EPU Saving mode disabled
CPU level up - 4.00g
Extreme Tweaking disabled
Memory at stated speed... i.e mine is at 1866 set yours to whatever it is.

The above should make your cpu run full at 4.4ghz with no heat penalty and 4.5 as well... again being a noob i have no idea why. If i touch xmp it seems to set the temps high or could be mce or even epu mode not sure at all but the above will definitely keep things running cool and you can overclock at cool temps but will have to play with vcore to go above 4.6...

Again please be aware i am new at this but the above works for me and keeps temps very low mid 20's idle and no more than 63 degrees in prime95.

Screenprint 4.4ghz

Even at small fft or whatever the hardcore moment is with Prime95 it does not go over 64/65 degrees. I have a H100i watercooler but temps should be a bit lower for you.

Your temps are about right now... so everything should be ok.
