So im planning to upgrade to a i7 in the near future. But should I get a i7 4790k or a newer i7?
My setup atm is this:
gtx 1070
650w gold psu
Gigabyte GA-Z97P-D3 Intel Z97
16gb hyperx ram
Noctua cooler

So is it worth going for a kaby or just stay with the old gen? Upgrading to newer gen means I need new mobo and ram.

(sorry for my bad english) and thx for answers

I would say yes if you have the motherboard (x series) and ram to support it.

the differences between I7-4790K and I7-6700K are not so great as to want to change all mobo and ram at this time, maybe upgrade to a ryzen system would be interesting but more expensive as well.

Hi,

I can't really say for sure about this.
Others will probably jump in and give a better answer.

But what I can tell you is this:
I have:
Motherboard: Asus Z97 Deluxe
CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K @4.6GHz
Memory: 16GB (2x8GB) 2133MHz Cl11 G-Skill
Monitor: 2x BenQ 24" 1920x1080
Graphic: ASUS Radeon RX 480 4GB

C: SSD: Intel 520 180GB for Windows and some essential s/w
D: SSD: Samsung 850 Pro 1TB for all other s/w including games etc.
H: HDD: WD Velociraptor 10 000 rpm 450GB
F: HDD: WD Black Caviar 2TB
E: HDD Samsung 1TB for other things
G: HDD: Seagate 3TB for backup mainly.
M: SSD BPX M.2 480 GB (Games only)

And the only thing I have discovered, no matter what intensive games is: The graphics card is the bottle neck - not my wonderful Intel Core i7 4970K @4.6 GHZ

My games?
A few of them:
Far Cry 4
Far Cry Primal
Battlefield 3
Battlefield 4
Battlefield Hardline
Battlefield One
Crysis 2
And perhaps the most damnding of them all: Crysis 3
GTA V
Maffia 3
Deus Ex: Mankind
Doom
Metro Last night
Metro 2033
COD Black Ops 1
COD Black Ops 2
COD Black Ops 3
COD Ghosts
COD Infinate Warfare

And in none of them have my cpu exceeded to more than 60% load on its cores.
I have dual monitors and on the second I have CoreTemp + its Gadget plus a Grapcicscard Gadget so I can keep constant control over the loads and temps.
Yes I do have Windows 10, but with 8gadgetpack this is possible.

Best regards from Sweden

An i7-7700 (non K) vs I7-4790K is a performance toss up, with an OC the i7-4790K should be faster (http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7700-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4790K/3887vs2384) You can run the i7-7700 on a cheap MB (no OC).

An I7-7700K vs i7-4790K is about 15% faster. http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4790K/3647vs2384

An i7-4790K is $350. All of the I7-7700s are under $300. That gives you $50 towards MB and Memory. The memory cost is the killer.

Comparing CPU+Z270 MB + 16 GB memory vs just CPU you are spending $150 to $200 more. You'd need to sell your current MB, CPU and Memory for a good bit to close that gap.

Wait, what CPU are you using now? More than likely a better GPU is going to give you better gaming performance. And with the war between Intel and AMD raging right now, I would hold out to see what's next. Intel is going to mainstream 6 core CPU's instead of quad cores. And after that AMD is going to 7nm, which should offer a huge bump performance and power saving.

The only way it would be worth going for Kaby Lake is if Coffee Lake was compatible with LGA 1151. It's rumored to be compatible, but Intel has not officially announced that.

That being said, the 4790K is still a great and relevant CPU by today's standards. I suppose that's why it still costs as much as it does.

If u talk bout new assembly, i'll answer u Kaby for sure. But yo platform is still actual even in 2017, so i7 4790k is a good choice. Have one of my machines z97+4790k+gtx1080 this assembly still actual
