I'll be going to a computer shop $350 in my pocket, and I've decided to get the i7-4790K OR the MSI GTX 970 Gaming 100ME. So here's the thing... they're both priced at around $350, and I can't buy both. Although I can save up for another 1 and a half year for another $350. So what is a good piece to upgrade while I'm in the temporary build for 1 and a half year?

I'm aiming on playing GTA V on High at 30FPS or 60FPS.

4690K quad core no hyeprthreading Made for gaming solid choice when OC'ed will perfrom clock for clock with I7 coz almost every single game is coded to poop on core 0 and core 1 and the reset of the cores are not used to the limit (the reason why intel beats AMD FX)

4790K quad core with 8 threads (hyper-threading) good for ppl who game and want to live stream at the same time or render and stuff

Xeon E3 1231-V3 when u want a quad core 8 threads BUT NO overclocking and you're on a budget (it dosnt have the IGPU) so it is a bit cheaper

IMO u should wait until the R9 3XX is out it is so close now lol and im not sure if your motherboard will even support Overclocking a K CPU

the R9 380X should be cheaper than the GTX980 and perform on par or exceed it even coz amd needs the market share unlike nvidia so their cards are usually cheaper for the same performance

IMO for now grap a 4690 I5 and in June grap a R9 380X or a GTX970 if the price drops which i dont expcet i only see the GTX980 drooping in price

Alright, so I'll be grabbing a i7-4790K (Would a i7-4790 be a wiser choice?) and then save that cash for the awaited R9 380X? What do you think?
The MSI GTX 970 Gaming 100ME is just tempting me, but now that I heard of the R9 380X.... Hmmm...

Go for the cpu, lol dont get tempted by "limited edition" advertising,it is just an advertising to attract more buyers for that specific brand, it is a gtx 970 and it performs just like the other millions of them on the market, maybe it performs 1% better so what lol. u can overclock it for that 1%. Go for the cpu, u really need a cpu upgrade. As u said the r9 300 series is really near so u might get that or maybe the prices for r9 200 drops even more and u can get a r9 290x (from the speculation only r9 390x it is a new model with hbm memory the others ones will just be rebrands but nothing is sure right now)

Good call. I was about to be dragged to those sad buyers who bought it for the limitedness. Heh.
Any good GPU suggestion once I get that CPU?
R7 380X sounds like a good one considering it can match the GTX 980 at a cheap price. :/

It's final though, I'll buy the CPU first and wait for the R7 380X.
I cannot decide on the best answer because Warp 9 and Dragos Manea got me to my decision...

Don't waste money on the 4790k, you have a locked motherboard so an unlocked cpu is kinda wasted. I'd get an i5 and save the rest till you can buy a better video card. If you really want 8 threads then look at a Xeon, priced like an i5 but has hyperthreading like the i7s.

if u are into only gaming why a cpu .. if you overclock g3258 to something like 4.5 ghz with hyper 212 .. and put a 970 in it .. im sure u will get above 60 fps in 1080p.. when u pair a 4790k with r7 265 i dont think that will cross 60 fps in demanding games like gta v.. and gta v's VRAM usage is about 3 gb easily.. u have only 2gb VRAM with that 265.. we can see the bootleneck now itself..

Overclocking is not an option for me until I get an ASUS Z97 PRO (WiFi).
