So I just spent about 2-3 hrs trying to overclock my CPU and I think is the best I'm gonna get.

At 1.235V
From 4.00 to 4.6ghz
10 mins Prime95 testing at max load peaked at 80C for my 2nd core, the others peaked at 73, 77 and 77.

Idle temps are around 41-43C

Gaming temps are about 56-59C

Anybody who knows anything about overclocking.

Are these temps safe? Should I stick with this?
I don't think I'll be able to get better results, but I'm unsure since this is my first time overclocking.

I'm using the Cooler Master V8 Air Cooler.

I wish I could push it to about 4.8. It stays at around 70-80 at 4.8 using Prime95 but randomly spikes up to 90-100 every time all of a sudden then goes back to 70-80s.

I use OCCT to stress test. Also Realbench is good to use. OCCT will fail fast if your CPU isn't stable while Aida64 will run for hours on an unstable cpu.

4790K will run at 4.2GHz on all 4 cores, 4.3GHz on 3 Cores, and 4.4GHz on 2 cores and 1 core. So 4.5GHz would be a boost though not by much.
Prime95 is a poor test since version 28.5 (IIRC), unless your OC workload heavily relies on AVX.

The tjMax (throttle temp) on Haswell/DC is 100'C, so you're below throttling, but 80'C would be the upper-end I'd recommend in a torture-test like Prime95 or Aida64..
Day-to-day use is never going to stress the CPU close to a true torture-test.

That might've been the version number.... I was going from memory.

If you're using a Prime95 version that doesn't stress AVX instruction sets then my gut feel on it is those temps are a little on the high side.,

I'd use Aida64 to validate the results you're seeing, but I'd be surprised if they were much different.

Overall, temps and voltages are totally within "safe" zones for day-to-day operation......... although I would definitely recommend stressing for longer to ensure you're seeing true peak temps, and getting a solid picture of stability. Personally, I like to use a 60minute test myself..... although you will get suggestions to run for hours through days.... which is excessive IMO.

I was going to say my CPU load is never 100%. When I game it usually peaks at around 50-60% so the temps never reach that high so I would've thought that I'd be fine for daily gaming with these temps since it only reaches dangerous levels at 100% load. But now I'm starting to think that maybe I should lower it down to 4.5 ghz but then since the CPU turbo boosts to 4.4 itself it feels like I've gained little to nothing.

Thanks for the link to the guide and the help though. I appreciate it.
