i7-4790k overheating out of the box

so i just got the parts for my new system and after assembling it all the bios is saying my cpu's temperature is at 88+ degrees and after restarting it, it is blocking my computer from starting up after a restart because of this heat, Im using the default cooler with the cpu is that likely to be the issue? my other specs are:

Check to make sure your heatsink is seated properly, and that the fan is working when you power up the pc. Also check to make sure that your motherboard is not somehow over clocking your cpu. Go in to your bios, set optimized defaults, and then reboot.

The i7-4790K is tending to be hot. First off I would make sure that the thermal grease and CPU cooler are installed correctly. If after verifying the CPU cooler installation it is still overheating, I would RMA it.

Take the cooler off again and see, if it had full contact with the CPU.

What Thermal Paste are you using? I used MX-4 on mine and have great temps, idling in mid 20's (C), and I've been using my computer for the past 4 hours.



Also, I would never use the stock Intel cooler, it's not good and the small strips of TIM are insufficient. You should try and get at least a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO which is very reasonably priced, and works great.

If you can afford it, a closed loop liquid cooler like a Corsair H80i (which is what I have) works even better.
