Hello,

I've been running into some issues with my CPU getting extremely hot. Originally i was running GTAV and i noticed the ambient temperature on my case reading 38C, so i ran HWmonitor and noticed my CPU was at temperatures of about 89-90c while running the game.

I have attached a link with screen shots of my HWmonitor temperatures and a recent test i did with Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool (IPDT).

https://imgur.com/a/qtHJp

Obviously these temps are running crazy high. (Though this was under the IPDT load and i immediately stopped the test).

The test failing on the temperature module, is that cause for concern and something i should have looked at?

Specs:
i7-4790k (NO OC)
Maximus Hero VII
GTX 1080ti
****Stock CPU cooler****

Is it possible the heat could be caused by the GPU? It fits pretty snug into my case, possibly some airflow problems now?

Thank you in advance

Solution

Your problem is the Stock cooler. Intel Stock coolers suck. Pick up a hyper evo 212 for about $35. Whats your fan setup? and what is your ambient tempature?

Solution
You can try improving airflow in your case and see if that helps, but with temps that high, I don't think it's simply an airflow issue. I'm thinking you need to remove your cooler, clean off the old thermal paste with some alcohol, and apply some new paste.

Edit: good question by smashjohn too. Is the heatsink caked with dust or something?

The RPM's seem to be around 1300 idle with CPU temp of 40c. I'm pretty finicky about cleaning my computer though!

I have 2 dogs so i am usually dusting it out and everything, every couple weeks. The heatsink looked to be free of any dust or grime.

You're probably right. I have a front case fan, rear fan and top case fan, not sure the mm, maybe 120 and 140 in the front. My ambient temperature reading on the case is usually around 33c.

Yea i think so. Thank you for the reply, this computer was built for me so maybe i will bring it back and see if they can do anything. Ill probably just add the CPU cooler. Though it used to have a 980 in it so maybe that's causing the heat to rise a bit too.

33C in the case? and what is the ouside temp?

Sorry, around 33C when under load. When idle the case temp shows 24-25C. I'm in the basement so its fairly cool

So I bought and installed a cpu cooler. temps don't go above 70c now under load!!! thanks!

Although I still get the temperature fail sensor when running the Intel processor diagnostic tool...but everything seems to run fine. aida64 stress test didn't go above 70c.

Frames are stable. so I'll leave it at that.
