i7 4790k reaching 79c at prime 95 test. Is this good?

So i have an i7 4790k with a msi z97 gaming 5 board and a kraken x61 cooler.
I overclocked my cpu to 4.5ghz with 1.25 vcore and im getting 75-79c at the test that is suggested here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800828/intel-temperature-guide.html. My ambient temp is around 28c-31c (I live in dominican republic).

So should I be ok with this temps and overclock? Btw my iddle temp is around 30-34

80 degrees Celsius is quite high, but not high enough to do any damage I don't think. The tests are designed to put a very heavy load on your CPU, so I doubt that you would even reach that temperature while gaming. You're in the clear.

That seems a little high for that mild of an overclock. I would redo the thermal paste a few times and see if I get the same result.

I'm the author of the Intel Temperature Guide that you linked above; thanks for reading. Most new Members don't take the time or make the effort to look at the Stickies, so you're off to a great start!

Since you read the Temp Guide, you obviously ran Prime95 Version 26.6 Small FFT's, which is the best test available for evaluating thermal performance. Your Core temperatures are higher than what is typical for your hardware configuration, simply because your ambient temperature is high at 28 to 31C, and is 6 to 9C above standard (normal room temperature) which is 22C or 72F.

For the benefit of our other Members and readers, here's the temperature conversions and a short scale:

Cx9/5+32=F ... or ... F-32/9x5=C ... or a change of 1C = a change of 1.8F

30.0C = 86.0F Hot
29.0C = 84.2F
28.0C = 82.4F
27.0C = 80.6F
26.0C = 78.8F Warm
25.0C = 77.0F
24.0C = 75.2F
23.0C = 73.4F
22.0C = 71.6F Norm ... or ... 22.2C = 72.0F
21.0C = 69.8F
20.0C = 68.0F
19.0C = 66.2F
18.0C = 64.4F Cool

As Ambient temperature increases, thermal headroom and overclocking potential decreases.

Regardless of whether your rig is air or liquid cooled, all computer temperatures rise and fall with ambient temperature, so your Core temperatures are not unusual. Since your idle temperatures range just 2 to 3C above ambient, you cooler is performing well.

Here's the recommended operating range for Core temperature:

80C Hot (100% Load)
75C Warm
70C Warm (Heavy Load)
60C Norm
50C Norm (Medium Load)
40C Norm
30C Cool (Idle)
25C Cool

Core temperatures in the mid 70's are safe, so as long as you don't exceed 80C sustained, you're OK. Keep in mind that your 4790K will "Throttle" at 100C.
