Hello all,

I have an i7 4790k with a Corsair H60 cooler

No overclock, i'm getting temps;
Idle - 30-32 degrees

But when I game (been playing Witcher 3) it quite quickly can get up to around 70 degrees

From what I gather this is pretty high since the CPU isn't overclocked and I have a cooler.

I've cleaned and reseated the cooler with new thermal paste 3 times (familiar with the process) and that hasn't changed anything really.

To get into detail a little more I have Fractal R4 case w/ window and the fan configuration is as follows, two 140mm fans as intake on the front, two 140mm fans as exhaust on the top and I have the H60 fan on the back as an intake (which seemed odd to me but it's what the H60 installation guide says).

I was contemplating overclocking at some point but these temperatures right now are a little disconcerting. I've built several PC's but am by no means a professional so i'm looking to you folks for some opinions, or ideas regarding dilemma. Thanks a bunch.

Try changing your airflow the two on the top don't do pretty much nothing trying putting the at the back and change the single intake fan to the top. Also if you have a filter at the bottom of your case and the fan of your power supply is facing upwards try facing it down you want to make your pc as cool as possible. If nothing of thoose work try putting your pc in a cooler enviroment.

What is the cpu load when playing witcher 3? I don't have the game yet or else I would check myself. I do have the same processor with the h100i. I get roughly the same idle temp and even with an overclock I run 75C under full load with handbrake. So 70C might not be bad if witcher 3 is CPU heavy.

It seems to put it at about 30-35% load when playing that particular game. When i'm playing less graphical intensive games like World of Warcraft the CPU is around 50 degrees. There are lots of posts regarding the temps on this CPU but I couldn't definitely find out if my temps are really within in the norm.

On a closed water loop, air flow in the case doesn't really matter. Go into the BIOS and make sure that the fan head that the pump runs off of is at full speed always. The fan for the radiator can either be run off a fan controller or based on CPU load. That should improve temperatures.

The pump is plugged into the CPU OPT header and the numbers it gets in the bios seem consistent with i've seen on the internet 4400 RPM. I've got the fan for the cooler plugged into the CPU FAN header and it was originally set as PMW on the motherboard's "Standard" setting but the fluctuations we're super noisy and didn't seem to be helping temps, so I switched it to just operate at 50% until the CPU hit 70 degrees then to switch to 100% (Anything higher than 50% is annoyingly loud). Does that seem adequate?

Yeah been reading that I would have been better off with a good air cooler than the H60. I might switch it out, I took a blind recommendation from a store employee when I got the H60, might not have been the best choice.

I appreciate everyone's help. The H60 pump is making more noise than before all of the sudden. I think it's just on it's way out. Going to sub in a good air cooler and call it a day. I really don't recommend the H60 to anyone else haha.
