Hi guys,

I'm looking on eBay and for a small amount more than a new i5-4690k, I can buy an i7-4790k that is used but in excellent condition. Which would you choose?

Thanks!

If it is a private seller with good feedback, I would pick the 4790K.
Possibly the seller is cherry picking chips to get one with high overclock potential.
A 4790K that is a dog should still run at 4.0/4.4 stock speeds.

With paypal and the usual 14 day return period, you should be protected long enough to verify proper operation.

I often sell my old parts on ebay.
I always offer 14 day unconditional return.
But, I do document the part I send out so a defective unit can't be returned to me.

I think I might not buy until I was prepared to test the unit I bought.
A good seller will at least have a defective product return policy.
"as is" is not good enough.

Usually in the u.s. sellers will allow for defective doa returns with a short time period. Not a warranty but at least standing behind selling a working part rather than selling a brick. If it's not someone cherry picking cpu's looking for a better binned chip I'd tend to wonder why they're getting rid of the latest model cpu. At least if it's a slightly older design you could attribute it to upgrading (unless they're moving to x99 or something). I wouldn't chance it with an 'as is' and not even a basic doa clause in there. When people say no returns period I have to wonder what they already know and aren't disclosing. Although if it has ebay or paypal buyer protection, they're pretty good about seeking resolutions to matters and if a purchase is disputed I believe it's paypal that pulls the funds back out of the sellers account and holds them in arbitration until the case is resolved. So it's not like a seller can take the money and run really.

Unfortunately I was outbid to the point that it wasn't worth it, but now I've decided to just go for it and buy a new i7 (for the increased performance with CPU-intensive video-editing and CG software).

Your comments were very helpful, thank you everyone.
