Hey guys, quick question...
Everywhere i look, I see people building near top of the line desktops with the i5. I also see that everyone prefers the i5 over the i7, and I would like to know why that is. For the $120 more, is it not worth to future proof your CPU?
Anyone have any stats on performance to compare...

Thanks in advance :)

They are both quad core Intel chips. While you are correct that it is about $120 more for the 4790k, for that you are getting the faster 4 Ghz clock speed over the 3.5 GHz of the 4690k. Also, the i7 has hyperthreading so it can process 8 threads at once, while the i5 has 4 physical cores but no hyperthreading.

In most games, there will not be much advantage of the 4790k, and users are preferring to put the saved money towards a faster GPU that will offer more bang for the buck in most cases.
The main reason the i5 is chosen over the i7 is because its cheaper, and its better suited for gaming.
While the i7 supports hyperthreading, it is not used in almost all games on the market. So the extra cost is better offset by putting it into the gpu.

The thing is that the i7s offer a single advantage - multithreading. No games utilise multithreading yet (except for very few titles like Crysis 3 for example), so there's no need to spend large amounts of money for practically 0 performance difference. Of course, if you want to do something else apart from gaming i7 might or might not be better than the i5 depending on the situation.

games supporting hyperhtreading are however popping up here and there (watch dogs, I even think battlefield benefits from it, not sure though) so the real question is. will it become a thing or will mantle from AMD's mantle remove the overhead(and possibly dx12 will have technology like mantle?)
