Hi there, my budget is a little over £1000 (UK) and I'm stuck choosing between a DDR3 build or DDR4 build.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/pra5hant/saved/

The DDR4 build is a £130 more expensive but is it worth it?

Thanks!

Solution
It depends on your future plans. One or two video cards and i7-4790k makes sense. 3 or more and you need to go up to the i7-5830k for the best performance.

i7-4790k is basically overclocked for you, no real need to push it farther. Lose a little cache, but that doesn't make a huge difference.

Memory bandwidth between DDR3 and DDR4 is basically the same. With the DDR4 having worse timings. Far easier and cheaper to get fast DDR3 right now. (as an example I bought DDR3 1600 with an X58 board when it was new, cost me $300 for 12GB. For a while I could pick up 8GB of DDR3 1600 for about $50, but even today 16GB will only set me back about $150)

First thing I noticed is the PSU. I wouldn't run a £1000 build on a Corsair CX. Get an EVGA Supernova G2/P2 or a nice XFX or Antec instead. Anything Tier 1 or Tier 2 A or B with enough wattage/amps from here will do: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html

To answer your question I'd need to what you're planning to do with the system. For gaming X99 is completely pointless, Haswell-E actually performs worse in games than the i7 and even an i5-4690K would be plenty. For editing/rendering/etc Haswell-R can be a good choice.

Hi there, I'll be using the build for 1080p (Maybe 4k) gaming, but will also use it for music production, Photoshop and maybe some video rendering. Also, can you recommend a decent PSU please?

Only going to use one GTX 970 because it kicks ass according to benchmarks, the i7-4790k seems like the best option as it's highly recommended. Is there a huge difference between 8GB DDR3&16GB DDR3?

In that case I'd get the Z97 build and seriously consider getting an i5-4690K. Incidental editing/etc doesn't justify X99, and it doesn't really justify an i7-4790K either.

As for the PSU, you can't go wrong with an EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2. Good price, and you can SLI and overclock to your heart's content without worrying:

Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($114.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $114.99

If you don't plan on overclocking/SLI'ing you can also get a 550w XFX:

Power Supply: XFX XTR 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $74.99

EDIT: 8GB RAM is plenty for what you'll be doing. The only things that'll use more than 8GB is, again, editing/rendering and if you don't do that a whole lot I can't really justify spending a bunch of money on extra RAM.

With the components I've chose I feel as though I don't need to overclock, have a look at the i5 build I put up!

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/pra5hant/saved/

Is that PSU alright? I want to stick with Corsair and may upgrade to 16GB RAM! The price difference between the i7 and i5 is small though...

Thanks.

Two thumbs up for that i5 build!

That's a great PSU, very good choice.

That i5 price doesn't seem to be right, when I look in the CPU list it's there for £173. That's a difference of almost £80. It depends on how thick your wallet is whether you consider that a big difference or not I guess :)

Ah yes, there's a £121 difference, not sure why PartPicker says different (perhaps because of the different buying sites), but keeping in mind these parts will be purchased upon Amazon here in the UK, thanks for the support!

Ah I see. In that case being a bit under budget on PCPartPicker is probably a good thing, since you won't get the absolute lowest prices on everything from Amazon. This way you'll have some wiggle room.

Good luck!

Oh, forgot to ask, what's the best motherboard with the i5? http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00KPRWB9G/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3R5BMCVYNKHAV
Something under £70 please.

Under £70? That's going to be hard.

Quite a trimmed down board. A bit higher up is the Asus Z97-A, which is a lot more solid:

Both are great boards, and both would do great for your build. Some people have issues with MSI, and Asus is king in build quality, but the MSI is prettier in my opinion.

Pick the one that speaks to you the most, you can't really go wrong either way.

The one that spoke to me was the cheaper MSI one hehe, thanks.
